@pachamama: We did get a temp of 99.4 earlier which we thought confirmed an ear infection. We haven’t taken his temp since. He’s down for the night after some calendula and benadryl. I'm hopeful that in the morning he’ll be acting like his normal self.

Weird! Do you remember if it was hot to the touch? The one on my sons foot is. We just walked him down to the pharmacy and the pharmacist recommended calendula. So we put a bit of that on for now and we’ll wait and see what happens.

DS had something like this around the same age actually. At first I thought it was hand, foot and mouth but he never developed anything further than some redness on his foot. He would wake up SCREAMING and it lasted 2 days and then it it just went away on its own, though his foot did peel for a bit. We were also out of town when it happened. His pack and play was set up near a heat vent, so we thought maybe he burned it, but we still aren’t sure. Anyway, I hope he feels better soon!!!

This is a very long story so please bear with me.

We’re at the end of a long vacation in Spain. We left one hotel this morning then drove 4 hours to our next destination. LO (17 mo) was acting a bit grumpy as we packed because it was his naptime. I put his shoes on to head out and as we packed he cried if I tried to put him down so I went ahead and put him in the car while my husband packed the car up.

We expected him to sleep the majority of the car ride but he kept waking up with some mild crying. We ended up stopping at a town about halfway to our destination (and up some windy mountain roads) and when we got him out he started screaming. When we set him down on his feet he would tremble and not walk anywhere. His screaming got worse and we thought it could be an ear infection - which he gets occasionally- so we thought we’d go ahead and drive to our destination and try to find a doctor.

We just arrived and he barely slept, but stopped screaming and did a halfhearted cry for much of the remaining drive. We set him down and again he wouldn’t move but screamed. Then we take his shoes off and now he isn’t screaming but wouldn’t put any weight on one foot. He doesn’t scream when we touch it, though he doesn’t like it. We snuggle him a bit while we try to find a doctor and after 20 min he’s not crying and will put a bit of weight on it.

We just put him down for a real nap in the crib here and plan to go to the doctor if he is acting weird at all when he wakes up.

What I thought I’d ask in the meantime is if anyone has seen anything similar or has any thing to look out for? As I mentioned we’re in Spain and it looks like the only options for care on the weekend are hospitals. I also worry about my ability to communicate and answer questions accurately since none of us speak any Spanish. So I’m hoping some of you may have experience to say it’ll be fine, or otherwise tell me things to mention to the doctor so I can be prepared. Thanks!
