Thanks ladies! I guess I am counting correctly and that my LO is just a Chatty Cathy lol. I was worried I was "cheating" on her word count number by counting words that I shouldn't be! Phew!

i don't count words that they repeat back. only ones they can use spontaneously, or if you point to something and ask what it is and they can respond. animal sounds count. that number doesn't seem too crazy to me. there is a wide range of normal.

I think you're counting right. DD is very verbal and had always had far more words than she's "supposed" to.

I don't count the ones she repeats back, only the ones she says spontaneously. I think she has 75 like that at 21 months. But it sounds like I might be counting wrong?

I think they all count. I wasn't sure about the ones I could only understand too, but I now count them.

I think those all count. I asked the ped this same question at DS's 18m checkup. They also said it counts if it's a word that only you understand - as long as LO uses the word and it's close to representational (app for apple).

Is there any criteria for counting the words that your little one is saying? Does it count if they are repeating words back to you, but not using them on their own? What about animal noises that they are using correctly upon seeing a picture of the animal? Fwiw LO is 17 months old and has about 40 words. At her 15 month checkup she had about 20-25 words and the doctor said that was highly unusual that she had so many. I just want to make sure I'm counting words correctly!
