The libraries we've gone to have all had train tables. So she does a mix of playing at the train table and bringing me books to read. Some days we've gone it's mainly hanging at the train table.

One idea that has worked really well for us, is to reserve books online, and then go pick them up. Then the pressure of looking for books is off, and we can just enjoy the experience. We usually end up finding several other things while we're there, but I'm not having to book hunt (especially for adult books) which makes it easier for me to help Lorelei have fun and also learn about some library etiquitte (and as you can imagine, since it's me, the "etiquitte" is pretty darn relaxed; mostly things like, "It is not okay to snatch newspapers from elderly gentlemen and run off shrieking and ripping them," or, "We leave at least one or two books on the shelves. Giving people meaningful work is good; creating an entire new job or job function is a *little* over the top." Also, "The kick-step stool is not a launch pad. ER visits aren't that fun, and I am already really aware of how well you jump."). Ellie really loves the library and she can be on her own somewhat because she's really easy to trust in that setting.

My son is three, he is only now able to enjoy the library, because he connects the fact that he can take the books home.

Before, it was just pull everything off the shelves.

@Mrs. Pen: we go twice a week usually and have since he was 6 months... but he is definitely loud, busy, and crazy there! They have a huge play area with a house, puppets, train table, fish etc. so it's encouraged. We very rarely read at the library -- that's only at home!

I've been taking my nanny LO regularly since he was around 10 months old. He's never sat still through a book at the library. He is 18 months now and he wants to run around during story time and pull down books which is fine. We try not to disrupt others and just do our own thing. I think its still good for him to explore and see the other kids enjoying reading. He loves "reading" books by himself at home so I think some of it is sinking in. :)

My 3 year old likes to sit and read with me, but not my 13 month old. So I take my younger one to storytime. She will sit still for that. It is 30 min.

I have never had success with toddlers sitting happily at the library and reading books either  . Luckily, our library is well prepared for that and has some other fun things for them. I find they look forward to it and enjoy the books I choose when we get back home. We just work on two rules: walking feet and quiet voices, besides those we just don't stress about it.

I was always excited for when LO would be old enough to have a weekly library trip - but he doesn't love it there. He is too busy. He won't sit and read books, and he may pick out a couple, and then quickly lose interest. He'd rather make messes, be loud and explore. Oh well!

What age did your LO enjoy the library?
