We have a nice woll peacoat that lays flat that we will use for when she's outside of extended periods of time, and I plan on keeping a puffer coat in the car in case of car troubles. The only time she's outside is from the daycare driveway to the the door, so very limited exposure to the cold. More of a percaution since our car is in the garage and warm when we get in it (both home and at work.)

we have a patagonia fleece we got off hb classifieds that we use for the car ride. and also bring his puffer coat, if we'll be outside for an extended period of time. if it's not too bad out, we'll just put him in his clothes in the carseat and put the puffer coat on after.

@looch: yup, I have one and it's super warm, wind proof and seems like it'll be waterproof as well.
Good to know about LE policy. I think I'll watch for sales and buy one.

@locavore_mama: oh i see, it's like a puffer, but not so thick.

I really like lands end, you can not beat their return policy (I had a puffer for myself and all the feathers came out after 2 years of wear and they let me return it).

I think we're doing a wool peacoat. I've been doing some research and I've read that they are generally okay as long as they aren't too big in size.

@looch: this is the baby version.

http://www.patagonia.com/us/product/baby-down-sweater-jacket?p=60517-0

It's very thin and compact. Think of a down coat then you vacuum seal it and suck all the air out. LOL

What is a down sweater coat? We use fleece...we have a 3 in 1 coat with a fleece inner layer and a rainproof outerlayer.

When it's winter cold, I throw her into a suit. It's big enough for her to wear clothes underneath, but thin enough so she doesn't overheat and I don't have to worry about it interfering with the car seat. I throw a sheepskin or blanket on top of it if it's really cold.

Even in the coldest days, if she's just going to be outside to and from the car, I can't really bundle her up more since she gets warm so easily.

We have a couple of LL Bean quarter zip fleece jackets. They are so thin, and lightweight but really warm. We used them last year, too. They are somewhat expensive, but I find that they run big and the sizes can last a while. For example, P was wearing 3-6 months early last winter. Then we got 12-18 in the early spring, and she can still wear them now (even though almost all the rest of her clothes are 2T). If she happens to have a growth spurt, I will send them your way ;)

For those with toddlers in cold climates. What do you / are you going to do about coats?

A local car seat tech recommended a Patagonia type down sweater coat because it's so compact. I have one and it is extremely warm and will work well for door to car. Perhaps I'll just leave a shell at daycare for when they go out to play?

Does anyone else have a down sweater coat from another brand? I have my Patagonia from my last job but I'm not paying that for a toddler!
I'm thinking Columbia or Land's End might be cheaper but are they as warm?
