We live in MA and my LO wears this as his car coat: http://www.carters.com/carters-baby-boy-cold-weather-shop-fleece-jackets/886149488349.html#navID=header&start=7&cgid=carters-baby-boy-jackets-and-outerwear

It seems to keep him pretty warm despite it being thin. We just put a hat on him and then put a blanket around his legs after strapping him in the seat.

We live in Boston and spend many weekends in northern NH. We always have to go outside to get to our car. For us, being cold in the car is not really an issue. Sure it's cold when you first get in, but our car seems to warm up pretty quickly (one of the bonuses of a small car?). We remove coats and muddy shoes as soon as we get in the car. After buckling in, I offer a blanket. Done!

My good friend makes these and they are awesome. No worries about being too bulky, and no worries about not being able to stay warm enough. http://slingsandmore.com/car_seat_coats.htm
We had one for Lorelei last year, and a new one this year. I'm going to be selling the too-small one. I should probably do that already, huh?

It lays flat so we can keep it on in the car, keeps her warm, and she LOVES It! haha I throw a blanket over her head to and from car to building. (we are in negatives right now!)

we are in RI. we use a gap jacket (it's kind of fuzzy, not quite fleece..?). I give her a blanket in the car if it's cold, and of course a hat if needed.

I warm up the car ahead of time.

I live in central Canada and there is no way a fleece alone would cut it. I use either his Old Navy pea coat and a blanket or his Columbia suit (it's just lined fleece so not puffy but warm).

Here is a pic of a suit just like his (different color).

We do the North Face Perrito jackets in Michigan and find them plenty warm. They are puffy but very compressible too. The trick with them is to leave the coat on, unzip it, buckle and then zip over the buckles.

You can tell if this is a suitable way to meet the requirements by buckling him in without a coat, get the straps set correctly then take him out and put him back in with the coat on using this trick. I have never had any issues at all with them so they are my go to coat for toddlers.

@Beyond2: I live in the NE as well, Southern CT though.

My son is a polar bear, though. He will tolerate the fleece in the car, and he wears his hat and mittens. I also send a 3 in 1 coat to daycare, for when they play outside.

I dress him always in lined pants, either fleece lined or jersey lined, like these, from Gymbo:

@Beyond2: I have taken to putting a thick fleece hoodie on her. But I have also heard one of those Patagonia down sweater jackets will work. Think a puffy down coat then you suck ALL the air out and flatten it. Lands end also sells a version so it's cheaper than Patagonia. But I have also seen the Patagonia ones on 6pm.com. I have one so I think for door to car it should do the trick. On particularly cold days I would probably wrap him with a blanket as well.

@looch: We have to go outside to get in the car. We do have a garage but it isn't attached and it's actually easier not to park in there because it's so tight. I can't get my son into the car especially with my pregnant belly in the way :-/

Do you mind me asking what area you live in? We're in the northeast...in a hill town so it's usually cold, snowy and windy all winter. I'm wondering if a fleece would be enough.

I need to find a winter coat for my son that is flat enough to wear in his seat. The taking it off and turning it around trick doesn't work for him at 15 months old. We live in too cold of a climate to ride in a cold car with no jacket on. My MIL just bought us 3 coats and they are all too puffy. I'm at a loss.

Links would be SUPER helpful. Thanks all!
