I'm home on maternity leave right now and I still can't get dinner done before 7-7:30. My daughter (22 mo. ) is incredibly picky, she refuses to eat almost everything, so there are nights where she has yogurt and fruit for dinner. My schedule when working is pretty close to yours, except she goes to bed at 9 instead.
Off at 5, after picking up the kids from my Mom and the babysitter I get home at 6-6:15 (and I work 1.5 miles from home!)

It sounds like you get dinner ready as quick as you can with your schedule. The most important thing is that LO gets to eat with the family. I get off work around 3:00, start dinner when DH gets home around 5:00. I try and have LO eat whatever we are eating, but typically he is getting some extra veggies or fruit.

I find its easiest to partially prep my LO's meals in advance (we don't all eat dinner together because frankly, there isn't time to make us all dinner by around 6 and I don't want to eat that early anyhow!). LO needs to eat by around 6:30 at the latest or else she gets very hangry and we spend the evening in meltdown city.

As for what she eats, she eats everything!! I try to make sure her dinner has a protein, a veggie and a fruit. She also eats cheese and yogurt at almost every dinner. Dinner also usually has a carb, either in the form of a veggie carb like peas or corn or a carb like cornbread, pasta or brown rice.

I save our leftovers or hold out some of what I cook for our dinner for LO's dinner the next day. If I cook something like chicken, I'll save out some plain cooked chicken and 1 day give her leftovers of however we had the chicken for dinner and then the next day make her chicken salad with the plain cooked chicken I had set aside.

I keep easy-grab items on hand to add to her dinners like hummus, pickles, cheese sticks, yogurt, frozen broccoli/peas/green beans, frozen eggplant cutlets, etc.

I think it's more important that your schedule work for your family (and that it hasn't been a billion hours since your LO has eaten last) than having them fed by a specific time. In our case, DS usually eats dinner around 8-8:30, then a bath, then bed. The later time works best with our family schedule.

This is somewhat of a spin-off to the toddler dinner time post. I noticed there were quite a few posts where LOs' dinner times are before 6:30pm and a few questions came to mind.

What time do you usually get home?
Do you start cooking LO's dinner right when you get home?
What do you usually cook for LO's dinner?

I get off work around 5:30pm, pick LO up from daycare, home by 6:15pm, start dinner prep right away & LO gets dinner around 7pm. Bathtime starts right after dinner (very messy eater), in bed by 7:45pm & hopefully asleep by 8:15pm.

Maybe I should prepping dinner the night before (after LO goes to bed) so that dinner is already cooked & just needs a quick pop in the microwave?
