My 26 month old stands at a step stool at the island and helps. I read a good suggestion somewhere to give your kid their own "special bowl" if you're baking. I have my bowl of actual food, and she gets a bowl of flour, sprinkles, and water. That way I don't have to worry about raw eggs or her spilling our cookie dough all over the floor.

She also helps pour pre-measured ingredients and I tell her I need her to be my taste tester for chopped veggies.

I don't let her cook with me if it's just a normal day and we just need to eat. We only do it when I have lots of time and patience.

We have a table and chairs in our kitchen, I let my son sit there and he does things like mix things, cut vegetables, etc.

I've also let him stand on a step stool next to the sink where he uses a vegetable peeler. He's 5 now, so I do let him cook at the stove under constant supervision.

My LO helps daily but doesn't do much. She pours and mixes. She likes to use the basting brush to brush oil or seasoning on things going in the oven. She loves drying greens in the lettuce spinner. Sprinkling salt is a bit too (but risky). If I can't come up with anything else for her to do she puts the forks on the table.

She does a lot of her help at the kids table from Ikea. She watches a lot from sitting on the counter.

We have a learning tower just like that. It works GREAT. M loves standing in it and really loves to help. She will crack eggs, stir ingredients together. She cuts peppers for me with dinner knives but mostly she just loves to mix and stir. I can give her a couple of bowls and some spoons with some flour and water and she is happy.

I've started letting her stand on a chair and help me mix things. We don't have a lot of prep space by the stove (all our counters are away from the cooking area), so I'd like to get a freestanding island like this so she can help more.

Yup! We have a stool like that and it's called a learning tower. We got her a wavy vegetable cutter and she uses that to cut all sorts of things. Green beans, celery, carrots, etc. she loves to crack eggs and mix them. We let her dump ingredients and mix things. Basically anything that does not involve raw meat or being near the stove we allow. When she wants to help and we need to get dinner ready I give her some of whatever we're prepping but don't really need to cut up. She usually ends up eating 75% of what she cuts anyway! Lol

E is really likes to get involved and "help" with anything you are doing. Recently, my inlaws (who have her three days a week), have started letting her stand on a stool and help in the kitchen. She loves it so much and it is really good for her.... but I don't have the time to stand there, supporting her on a stool, and chopping slowly with a butter knife!!

So.... I've decided to buy one of these:

https://www.lucaandcompany.com/products/the-funpod/

This will take care of the stool issue - I will be able to walk around the kitchen cooking while she stands still doing the task I've set her (mixing, whatever).

How does your toddler help in the kitchen? What kind of tasks do they do? Do you have any other gear suggestions for me? Is there such a thing as a safety knife?! No?
