@HappyBaker: that's great news! And yes to daycare too: ours has sippys there, so I'm spending so much less time on dishes.

@Rocker2014: Awesome, I'm so glad it went well for you too! DS tried to walk around with the sippy in his mouth yesterday a la his new lovey, but we made him take it out / are really trying to only do milk at meal times and nap. The best part of this switch is I now can just send a SINGLE sippy cup to daycare and they keep it in the fridge all day, no more washing bottles, woo hoo!

@HappyBaker: so much better than I thought it would! I was hesitant to respond before the weekend is over - didn't want to jinx it! Only a couple of quick tantrums when given a sippy/straw cup instead of a bottle which was great. We decided to keep the before sleep bottle because she's been having horrible night terrors for the past few months and it is the only reliable way to wake her up calmly and get her back to sleep quickly. We'll work on that once she is comfortable with the new cups.

I hope things are going well for you!

@Rocker2014: How did your day go? Ours actually went good all day for the most part, we only let him have a straw cup at meals and before nap, and he wasn't super mad about it...though he did drink a LOT less than normal (but he was drinking way too much before so that's not really a bad thing). Bedtime tonight was a train wreck! He saw a photo on my phone of him drinking a bottle right before he went to bed and just completely lost his mind. He refused to drink out of the straw cup and ended up just going to bed with no milk. Which...is not the worst thing since we have to do that transition at some point anyway!! Hope your day was not a wreck!

@Rocker2014: Tonight I took a shot at putting DS down using a straw cup instead of a bottle because he'd been playing with one at dinner....he was totally fine with it and went right to sleep in his crib after taking a few sips of milk! I'm totally going to try cold turkey tomorrow since he did so good with going to bed. Good luck!

@MamaG: she's very skilled at getting the contents out of sippy and straw cups, (sometimes by throwing them!), so I am anticipating a lot of mess and waste when she is offered those instead of bottles :silly:

@Rocker2014: Not quite the same but we ditched pacis cold turkey with my 3y old and gave him a teddy bear next to his muslin lovey and he took to it as his second lovey. It was a really smooth transition.

Good luck and fingers crossed!

@Rocker2014: Why will you be wasting milk? Can you offer something other than milk (water) at non meal times?

I generally find that the cold turkey approach works best, and tends to fair much better than I expect. I distinctly recall how scared I was to take away the pacifier of my older child at 17 months. It was ultimately really a non-event (thankfully).

@Rocker2014: Much easier said than done, I know. Our 16mo is so attached to binki (sucks one, holds two) but we just cold turkey stopped allowing it during the day. Nowhere to be found except in his crib. He is allowed it for naps and bed.....it was annoying for a few days, but now he knows. And in another month, we're ditching it for naps and bed. Nervous!

@Tanjowen: she loves straw cups at meals, and sippy cups too. She chews them up good! But between meals, only bottles will do. We're going to make sure she has lots of options to choose from this weekend, I have a feeling we will be wasting a lot of milk!

@Rocker2014: We had great success weaning to straw cups for milk since he can chew on the straw. We are now in the process of weaning on those, but night milk still goes in the straw cup. Have you had any luck trying them?

Ugh, sorry! I would say ditch them cold turkey now (out of the house even) and the daycare friends since they don't have them, that won't be an issue. I would encourage another lovey/blankie as well. We thought bottle weaning for our first would be hell and it was totally fine (last night bottle given at 18m!) My sister waited until age 2 to bottle wean her first and it was a disaster....just gets harder as they get older!

@HappyBaker: definitely will, and I'll think of you to keep me strong! Our doc said it was fine to keep giving her the bottles with water in them, which I'm trying to avoid using as an excuse to give in and not do this. One thing I'm hoping will help is LO is obsessed with Elmo, so we are going to give her a stuffed Elmo (her first Elmo toy) on Saturday morning. Maybe she'll end up trading her old lovey for a new one.

I have no advice but we are going through the exact some thing with my almost 16 month old! He walks around with it just dangling in his mouth and just is in LOVE with the bottles.

Please update with how this weekend goes! We are also going to try to switch this weekend too and I am so nervous because he is obsessed.

@PinkElephant: I wish she would, I think I've bought every teether out there! I even offered pacifiers, but she wasn't having any of them :(

@kiddosc: @ShootingStar: I was thinking of keeping the nighttime ones at first just so she's not doing the rest of this on crappy sleep (for both of us). I'll consider the confusion issue, I'm not sure which is the lesser evil. There are already things she has at bedtime and not the rest of the day so I was hoping she'd be able to generalize bottles as something like that.

She may attach to something once the bottles aren't an option. I would probably get rid of them completely to avoid confusion though. My son was attached to his paci, one in his mouth, one in each hand. When we ditched the paci, his a+a blanket became his lovey. It was way less traumatic than I expected, good luck!

I can't say I have any advice, but I definitely feel your pain! My 2.5 year old still likes to have her milk in a bottle before bed- I did make her switch to a sippy cup top but the actual bottle is the same type I used when she went to daycare. I'm about to just take it since I'm pregnant and I need to have her off her habit before baby comes.

LO is 18 months, and, for lack of any better way to put it, is completely addicted to chewing on bottles. Bottles have basically become her "lovey", she wants one in her mouth when she's playing, anxious, tired, happy, etc. and will tantrum when she can't have one. It doesn't matter if they are full/empty, she just loves them. I have no idea why she developed this attachment, but here we are. We tried to bottle wean when she was about 13 months old, and it was a terrible disaster - she was constantly stealing the bottles of the other kids in daycare, which was awful. We were hoping she'd outgrow wanting them, but instead she wants them more and more. We've offered many other options of loveys, but nothing has really connected with her.

At this point, most of her daycare friends are off bottles and we're going to bite the bullet and get rid of all but her night time bottle, starting this weekend. I know it will be painful for all of us, any advice?? Anyone else gone through this? She's perfectly capable of drinking from cups and happily does so at meals, so there is no concern that she will dehydrate.

I so wish we didn't have to do this, it seems so mean to take away her best coping mechanism. But, she can't be the 5 year old still drinking from bottles!
