Undies free was the way for us....but that could just be because DS1 HATES being naked. I told him once he could keep himself dry and use the potty, he could have his undies on. That did the trick for us (for pee). He was also afraid of pooping on the potty, but what worked for us were the tricks in the Oh Crap Potty training book - specifically, showing him how poop is released by imitating it with play doh and showing him that he has control over it.....super embarrassing and weird to talk about, but it worked.

I have to agree with @MrsSRS: try to have him stand instead. DS is potty training and doing amazing but only because he stands to pee. He was much like your son and didn't want to sit on the potty and if he did he still wouldn't pee. He has a urinal with a spinning aim target which he loves and a step stool for the toilet. If your DS is anything like mine, fun games is the way to go. Best of luck mama!

Our situation was a bit different because my son was primarily trained for pee at school a few months after he turned 2. School pressured us to push for the potty at home too. We tried a few times and everything was always a battle. He would do things like look at me defiantly and deliberately pee on the carpet. He clearly knew what he was doing and did not want to cooperate. So we kept him in pull-ups at home until one day around 2y7m (or maybe 2y8m?) he said he wanted to use the potty. So we started bribing him with candy to use the potty. And now he's in underwear except for naps.

My point being... I personally found that waiting until he "seemed" ready worked best. Also shameless bribes. I never would have bribed him but my husband did it for poops and it was amazingly easy.

@ScarletBegonia: We're having similar issues... we're trying to prompt her less. She was telling us she had to go on Friday but today she will barely sit. Although when we stopped asking her or mentioning it she seemed more willing to go and sit a least (just not for very long).

I'd ask him if he wants diapers or not. If he says diapers, go with it and try again in a month or two. We are a month in and only now is DD telling us she has to go. We tried a few months ago and she resisted and asked for diapers. Not once this time has she asked. She's upset she has to wear one to bed. Good luck! Potty training is not for the faint of heart!

I don't know that it's the "right" thing to do, but I would give him diapers tomorrow. It's Christmas. Don't ruin it for yourself. Then after the holidays you could try again, or wait a few weeks.

Lose the underwear. You will have better luck if he's naked on bottom. Also maybe try having him stand to pee! And toss a cheerio in the potty to aim at. Maybe just a couple changes will knock the fear.

We are trying to get my 2yr, 9mo old son toilet trained over the holidays - we had planned to do a few days at home, then away on a holiday to a beach shack, and persist over christmas/new year. Unfortunately, the "beach shack" we rented on airbnb turned out to be a newly renovated house with all new carpets and furniture, and we didn't feel right about doing any training there because of potential accidents. Also, the first 2 days had been stressful and we decided we wanted to enjoy our holiday before the stress of the christmas period.

So we are on day 2 of try #2 and so far it has been a hellish disaster. My son has not really done anything significant in the toilet, and actually seems to have developed a bit of a fear now (just of pee so far - not even mentioning poo yet). Everything culminated in Christmas morning this morning where there was tearful resistance by him to sitting on the toilet, and tears (hidden) from me about possibly ruining his happy memories of Christmas.

He seems like he is afraid to pee in the toilet - he dances around and grabs himself (and drinks a ton so I know he's got a full bladder) but if we ask him to sit on the toilet he'll sit for literally 1/2 a second and say "I did a wee already" even though he hasn't. He gets off, and does a HUGE pee in his underwear on the floor. Sometimes I can catch him and put him back on in time to catch the end of the pee, but usually not.

Since we are only 2 days into the second attempt, I don't know if I should put the diapers back on and try again in a month, or persist. We have nothing major planned between now and new years so we can keep going and stay close to home, but I just don't know.

What would you do? Those who have been there before, is it worth persisting? My son has been an easy baby and kid and I honestly think this might be the hardest thing we've dealt with!

Thanks for any advice!
