Guys, sorry for spacing out. I got caught up in life and kept forgetting my own thread!

@Shree1990: currently keeping a fuss journal to see if certain foods are aggregating her gas, so I'll take that with me to the doctors next time I go in case it helps, but I did talk with her and she agreed it sounds like acid reflux. We agreed together that if her reflux doesn't get better with the clippings and our own managing, that we'd start a low dose of zantac. We'll also be going to a BF support group soon to get her latch assessed!

@LemonJack: Thanks for your story. Do you remember how long you block fed for? Like the time spacing? I've done every 3-4 hours and then every 10 hours for a while. I got frustrated both times and gave up, feeling like it made no difference. Guess I'll have to try again!

@MrsRcCar: Thanks lady. I do need to call you soon. :) Currently I'm struggling to work on her latch at night. It's so easy to let her shallow latch and go back to bed (especially since it doesn't hurt).

My younger two really struggled with reflux like symptoms in the beginning. About 10 days post lip and tongue tie revision was done they really turned a corner. We also worked with a chiropractor that specialized in oral/facial muscle release, plus suck training. The chiropractor was an extremely valuable asset in helping us manage the healing process. Hope your LO does better soon. Feel free to call or wall me.

I had this exact problem with my first. We had her frenulum clipped at two weeks, but nursing was still a struggle up until 8 weeks.

What helped me most with my oversupply was block feeding consistently. I also would take her off as soon as I felt my milk let down because it as so forceful. Once the flow slowed I would pop her back on. That seemed to help a lot with her gas issues and spitting up.

It took awhile for my supply to even out, but once it did I no longer had to do that. We ended up having a super long nursing journey. It did get better!!

I have only heard of this situation but didn't experience it myself. My friend also experienced anxiety due to this. It's natural for you to be concerned. Your doctor will be able to address any unusual concerns and you already know what is it that you can do. Be patient and write your observations down. Maybe that could help the doctor to further use that information to prescribe a better option. I am by no means saying that this could work, but I figure no harm in trying. For yourself too, try to be very analytical about it, diseases cause us to look for patterns and this information may help you and your doctor.

@pixiestix well, I think most normal babies with reflux get better if they are on a large enough dose. Some don't need very much. Some reflux babies just need some Zantac. My son did not actually show improvement until he was 9 months old and was on 40 mg/day of Nexium. And even with that he was still spitting up all the time until probably 14 ish months. That is actually an adult dose :crying: but we had a very unusual case (nb this was all under close supervision of a pediatric GI who knew what he was doing to give him such a large dose). I am sure your ped will start you on Zantac and if that doesn't work, some kind of PPI medication like Prilosec or Nexium. That is usually extremely helpful for most reflux babies!

@MrsADS: Thank you for your story. That's amazing that you were able to donate so much milk! Your story sheds some light that it may not be my over supply to blame. I figure I'll give this tongue and lip clipping about 2 weeks and if I don't see improvement I will seek some kind of reflux medicine. What improvements did you see from the nexium?

I didn't have the exact same situation, but similar. At birth/the first few days the nurses thought my DS had a tongue tie, his ped actually gave us a referral to get it fixed. Well, DS ended up being hospitalized at 3 days old for nonstop vomiting and being lethargic so obviously the tongue tie was kind of put on the back-burner. I continued to nurse him and actually over time the tongue tie issues (pain from nursing, how he was nursing) just went away so we never got it fixed.

He had extremely severe reflux. He actually had an upper GI x-ray series which confirmed the reflux - I don't think a tongue tie had anything to do with it. We were seeing a pediatric GI and on a super high dose of Nexium. He is still on Nexium at 2 years old, so I think it's just reflux.

I also had a massive oversupply. Like, crazy. I tried to minimize pumping but I had to pump, otherwise I could not nurse him. I had so much milk and such a fast letdown that he could take 5-6+ oz in just a few minutes and he would throw it all up. I remember the first few months, I knew the "time" he would usually wake up in the motn, and I would get up 10 minutes earlier to pump. I would pump literally 12-15 oz in 5 minutes of pumping, then feed him. I also did block feeding almost right from the start.

The only thing I can say is that it did *eventually* even out a bit, but I bought a deep chest freezer and donated 3,000+ ounces of milk to my local NICU milk bank. I had way, way, way more milk than he would ever use.

My oversupply was not contributing to my DS's reflux and I was extremely proactive to make sure that when I nursed him, he wasn't getting just tons and tons of milk at one time (i.e. pump before, feed the same side a few times in a row, etc). I could have fed him 1 oz and his reflux would still be out of control. It was a very bad case, though. I did try to catch my letdown in a burp cloth because it was like a waterfall and he would often start coughing and choking just because of the volume. I also couldn't let him just comfort nurse. I introduced a pacifier and after he had nursed, just swapped out the paci. That was hard because sometimes he wanted to comfort nurse and I just couldn't let him b/c I had too much milk. I think I may have made the oversupply a little worse by using the pump, but it was like the only way I could handle the milk and feed him. My oversupply was crazy crazy crazy.

Looking for support, hope and info related to the above topic, and acid reflux.

LO got her lip and tongue tie clipped yesterday (she's 4 weeks on sunday). She's been fussier and more uncomfortable since she got it done and I'm just a ball of worry.

I know the pediatric dentist said the procedure may or may not improve her acid reflux. So I'm hoping for the best but I'm also struggling with oversupply.

I've been using some tips i read about for the over supply, such as nursing her elevated and doing block feedings but I haven't been keeping up the best or been the most consistent.

Anyone else dealt with these problems all together like this? I'm wondering how much my oversupply may be contributing.

If you did get your LO's lip and tongue tie done, how long did it take to see improvement in the reflux?
