@nadsia: Thanks for the info. I may just do that but I'm skeptical that any other doc would say different. This doc did talk about posterior tongue ties and said my guy looked fine. Also, I believe this is one of the 2 docs (my LC told me about them) that does the clipping on infants pretty regularly.

Hi there
I just wanted to chime in to see if you know about the tongue tie baby support group/preferred provider list on Facebook? https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BFcr9ZE_KvC4tb6QPLhA3Yrtc3GnCm4g9BIGLVXzUWE/mobilebasic?pli=1

Tongue ties are sort of an anomaly and alot of Providers dont know how to properly diagnose sub mucosal/posterior tongue ties. It might be worth it to get a second opinion by a preferred provider. Sorry if I'm preaching to the choir here but I know of more then a few parents who have had to see a few different professionals to get there ties addressed.

@fussygal: I feel your pain. My guy got hooked on it over his first week. Then we finally got him off it in his 2nd week, and then the LC tried to suggest we use it again to help but I feel like that's back sliding and I'm nervous about even trying it again.

I'm pretty much just waiting to see if things get better with time because I feel like I've done just about everything to get him to latch right.

@PixieStix: she does well sometimes, but sometimes it's a fight to get her to latch without :( i'm actually kind of irritated that we had to wait a week to get into the doctors office to take care of the tongue tie, because within that week we had to use the shield to latch and she became dependent on it. It's a great tool, but very easy for them to become attached to.

Thanks guys. :)

@fussygal: I was hoping for something to improve his latch since I felt like I couldn't, but I guess I'll have to wait now and keep trying. My LC suggested using a nipple shield but I have such anxiety about them since we used one incorrectly his first week, and that's when he first damaged one of my nipples.

How is your babe latching now without it?

@PixieStix: that's a great weight gain! Glad that he actually looked really closely and wasn't just trying to get your money - that's always good to hear!

FWIW - we had LOs tongue and lip tie clipped two weeks ago (she's 3.5 weeks now) and her latch improved right away but it was still some work to get her latched and she's still on the shield (until today - the lactation consultant saw her feed without it she did really well so we are quitting cold turkey).

Well this is an odd update... The doc didn't clip anything. He looked at his lip and tongue pretty closely and told me that nothing was there to clip. I figure he could have at least offered since he would be making money off us, but he sent us on our way with nothing done. I'm both happy and confused. Guess we're gonna have to work a little harder at latching.

Better news is he weighed in at 8 lbs. 3 oz. He was just 7 lbs. 2. oz last week Monday. Whoa.

@PixieStix: as you know I had it done on my LO...I saw SOME improvement immediately, but it wasn't an immediate magic solution. It makes sense though--your LO has been nursing with his tongue/lips one way for a month now? Plus any practice sucking he did while in the womb. So it will take time for him to adjust to having the extra range of motion that the frenulectomy will give him. BUT It will happen. Especially if you do the lip stretching exercises that I'm sure the ENT will discuss with you. But he is still SO young that there is no way he's past the point of no return :) Good luck! and I personally would definitely get the lip tie doen as well, even if they say it's only mild. There's no reason NOT to do it and then you'll never have to wonder, what if.

We took E the day after we were released from the hospital. He nursed better right off. Not perfect but better. Now we are completely off shields and he is nursing like a champ. He does have a minor lip tie that we may have evaluated in the future. E barely fussed about it being done.

Remember I have done for both of my boys and they have both done great following the procedure.

I'm getting nervous. Our little guy gets his tongue-tie done for sure, and I'm going to check about his minor lip-tie. I just have this fear that it's not going to help us. Trying to not put all my eggs in this basket since I know we'll still have to work at better latches following the procedures but, gah... can't help but hope I see some significant change today after it's done. They said I can nurse him immediately following the procedure.

For anyone who got this done, how quickly did you see a change in your LO's nursing? And did any of you just wonder if you'd let your LO nurse incorrectly for too long that they might be past the point of no return? :/
