Update: I got referral from his pedi and today we went to see an ENT doctor. she examined him and said he has a mild tongue tie and it was up to us if we wanted to get it clipped or not. we chose to go ahead with it. we werent in the room, when they did it but it took seconds and they called us back in and had me nurse him right away. he was able to latch on right away and it didnt feel like my nipple was in a blender! i'm so glad i went ahead and got it done
Thanks to all of you for your input
@LemonJack: @snowjewelz: we also weren't told to do any stretches maybe thats only for more severe ties

@Mrsbells: We didn't have to do any stretches, but hers was a mild tongue tie so I don't know if that makes a difference.

I used a shield on one side for 4-6 weeks until I was finally able to wean off of it, and it was a lifesaver!

@Portboston: Thanks, this is all very helpful

@snowjewelz: Yes I'm looking online now and realizing how many different type of shields there are in different sizes!!

@Mrsbells: They didn't tell us to do anything, probably b/c the tie was supposedly so small! So I never really know if her tie was an issue for latching, or my flat nipples are, or both...

I have to say I am def not shy from the nipple shield. It didn't hurt my supply and thought we did use it for quite a few months, we did eventually wean and everything was fine. It was jut annoying to be looking for it and washing it (and finding the right fit for your nipples is important).

Yes multiple times a day for about three weeks I think. Melissa Cole has a YouTube on the stretching to make it less invasive for baby and slightly more "fun".

@snowjewelz: I might consider a shield whilst I figure out what to do. Did you have to do the stretching exercises afterwards, how did your LO cope with it?

@LemonJack: @Portboston: @Alba4: Did you ladies also have to do the post op stretching exercises? I called his pedi and they informed me they dont do the clipping but i should be getting a call back with a referral for someone who does and I'll take it from there

We went to the ENT twice; the first time the dr said the tie is sooo slight but he'll do it. Nothing improved; and we went a 2nd time to cut a little bit more. I still have no idea what really happened; but combined with my flat nipples we needed the help of a nipple shield for a while.

Thanks everyone that's some good information. I will have to decide if we want to go ahead with the clipping. Not sure why but i'm a bit hesitant about it. Partly because sometimes he is able to get a good latch so it doesn't hurt but sometimes he doesn't

@Mrsbells: I don't remember exactly how long the healing time was, but I know it took awhile. It took her a couple of weeks to relearn how to latch, and the pain lasted a little longer. It did eventually get better though! The only reason I would insist on them getting you in right away is because I figure the longer your babe is latching incorrectly, the longer it'll take for him to relearn how to properly do it, and the more painful it'll be for you.

Both my boys had a posterior tongue tie and had their frenulum clipped. Our pediatrician wouldn't do it. Instead we saw an ENT that specializes in frenulectomies in NYC. I think some dentists do the procedure too.

We had this issue. DS Could stick his tongue out all the way but he couldn't lift it to the roof of his mouth. The ENT we saw described it as DS using my nipple as a straw. It was horribly painful. We had it clipped when he was about 5 weeks. Within 2 weeks I had zero pain while nursing.

Check out dr gaheri's website. He has a wealth of information on ties.

@LemonJack: oh Ok thanks for that information. I'll speak to his doctor about it. What was the healing time for you and how long did it take for you LO to relearn how to nurse

I dealt with this exact same thing with DD, who is now 2. At the hospital one of the nurses mentioned she might have a slight tongue tie, but said if she was able to breastfeed without issues that it should be okay. It wasn't! Her latch was shallow and super painful. At her two week appointment I had them clip her frenulum and it made a huge difference. I have to warn you that she needed to learn how to nurse all over again, so it took a long time before we had a non-painful nursing relationship, but we eventually got there.

If I were you I would call your doctor tomorrow morning and insist they get you in ASAP to have the frenulum clipped.

Baby #2 is two weeks old now and his pediatrician mentioned how his tongue seemed a bit short when he cries etc. She said he might be tongue tied but said if he can stick his tongue out beyond his gum he should be fine. He definitely can stretch his tongue beyond his but doesn't always do it. When i put my finger in his mouth and let his suck on it i definitely feel that his tongue doesnt come all the way to cover his gum
I assumed that the painful latching and sometimes pain during nursing was just because he is still figuring it out but now i'm wondering if it's his tongue making it worse. Have any of you dealt with this. My nipples are so sore. With LO #1 i was sore for a few weeks and then it was so much better.

I forgot to add that he nurses for long periods usually in the range of 35 to 45 mins. LO #1 was the same but she got more efficient as she got older
