He was pretty distressed during the night and reluctant to feed - was up a lot (not that that's anything new!). But this morning he was back to his usual self, however not much improvement in the feeding. I think this afternoon he is maybe starting to learn about his new tongue, he's feeding for longer before getting upset and his latch seems deeper. I guess it must be hard after so long building up bad habits! I'm just putting him to bed now so will see how he does tonight.

@babyboecksmom His main symptoms have been fussing and crying during feeding, constant feeding and never seeming satisfied (despite good weight gain), and more recently reflux-y behaviours like arching and gagging. I do wonder also if this could be in some way related to the colic he had when he was younger. Hope you're able to get your DD checked soon!

@ginger333 That's great to hear - do you remember how long it took before you saw an improvement in feeding?

DS was 10 months old when we had his posterior tongue tie released (he had a lip tie done at the same time) ... that first night SUCKED - he had a terrible time figuring out how to use his newly released tongue, which resulted in painful bleeding nipples (for me obvs.) and he was up really frequently through the night, which isn't normal for him. BUT by the morning, he was better and that next night was back to normal. I'm glad we got it done - he's 21 months now and still nursing and it doesn't hurt!!
How is your guy doing now??

I'm glad you started this thread. I've had a feeling DD2 is tongue tied and I'm going to see if I can get her checked out ASAP. I hope your son feels better soon. Please give an update when you have a chance.

Well he had the clipping done, turns out 75% of his tongue was tied so I'm v glad I pursued it. He was pretty upset afterwards but I guess that's to be expected - and he was his usual self on the way home. This evening though he's been inconsolable, and he's now asleep in his cot having completely refused his bedtime feed, which is unheard of for him. He just cried in my arms til he fell asleep.

Fingers crossed he'll be feeling better before too long. Thanks so much for the encouraging replies, I really needed that this morning!

@Bubbles: Good luck for your clipping, my LO had both tongue and lip done at around 7-8 weeks and it made such a difference!

Wow so much information! Thanks for the repost  Good to hear so many positive experiences.
@birdofafeather I'm not sure if they'll give him exercises - I hope so! They've got an osteopath at the clinic who he can see afterwards if he needs bodywork.
Heading out in a few hours - nervous but hopeful!

i had my DD's tie clipped within 2 weeks of birth, so i can't say with an "older" baby, but i know a lot of bees have had their LOs ties clipped and i have yet to hear one that said anything negative about the effects. it stinks to see your LO held down, and it does bleed, but it's so quick and it will hopefully help a lot! do they have exercises for him to do afterward? good luck mama!

So my DS is booked in tomorrow to have his posterior tongue tie clipped after 5 months of feeding difficulties, and I have such mixed emotions about it!

He is breastfed and battles throughout almost all his feeds, screaming and crying in frustration. Recently he's started displaying reflux behaviours too - arching, coughing, gagging and wheezing, and I think this is probably linked. I've been searching for the answer all this time, and am finding it hard not to get too excited about the thought that we may be pretty close to having a happy breastfeeding experience for the first time. I know TT clipping isn't always an immediate solution, and I know better than to set my heart on it working - but the idea of being able to just calmly feed him til he is satisfied and happy is enough to make me giddy!

I'm worried about the procedure itself - though I know that it is very low risk. He's much older than most babies who have it done, and even just being swaddled will make him furious! I am also worried that I'm going to walk in there, and they are going to take one look at my 19 lb ball of chub and say "this baby doesn't look like he has any feeding issues!" He works so hard for his calories though, he spends almost his entire awake time trying to feed, and he gets up between 4 and 7 times at night to pack more in.

He's been diagnosed by an LC who has looked at photos of his mouth and tongue, and hasn't actually seen him in person (I couldn't afford a home visit) - which again makes me worried that I could be sent home with no solution. She's IB certified though, and seemed to think that the fact that his tongue barely moves from the floor of his mouth when he's crying is a fairly strong indicator.

Anyone else had LOs tongue tie clipped at this sort of age or older? How long did you find it took for their feeding to improve?
