@greatauntie: this is a very old post but we did the clip (tongue tie only but deeper than they realized at first) and never were even recommended exercises. She had no issues, didn’t reattach and I’m glad I did it because after having two more kiddos, I realize how pronounced hers was!
@Mrsbells: ha, this is a super old post!! R is now 5.5. and I’m glad I did it then and havent had to worry about any speech issues!
@Elizabear: we had no issues with less recommending and then doing it! I’ve heard of people with push back but I’m glad I never had to think about it, except for this post!

Also, be prepared that some ents will only do it if there is a nursing problem so if you decide to do it make sure you say nursing is an issue!

My daughter had tongue and lip tie clipped - separately weeks apart and I don't really see any "con" except the torment of decision making and the waiting for the appointment and the anxiety leading up to it. I was a super anxious mom but looking back, it really was nothing. One moment and done! The worst part is how they put the baby in basically a baby straight jacket for the procedure.

Both my boys had posterior tongue ties and got them clipped when they were newborns. I really can’t think of any “cons” to be honest. I didn’t want to take a chance with speech issues later in life.

@birdofafeather: we had DS's tongue tie clipped. It was a mild tie but was affecting his latch. We did it when he was still a newborn. It healed super quickly. I think doing it early is better ans then you can put it behind you

@greatauntie: I would ask for an ENT referral. I agree about someone with expertise. My son is 3 now but he had a significant tie that was clipped when he was 4 days old. I think the ENT just had me swipe under his tongue before every feeding to prevent scar tissue for a week? It was over quick and made him mad and awake enough to work on his latch. Your ped should know someone experienced to recommend.

My lactation consultant told me that whether the exercises need to be done or not is actually controversial. We did them to be safe - he didn't like it but it only took like 15 seconds and my son wasn't all that upset by them. Pediatricians by nature distrust dentists, but what's most important is that the provider - whether it be a dentist or ent - has lots of experience correcting tongue ties. The more experienced the provider is, the more likely it is to be helpful. We had great luck with an experienced pediatric dentist.

Getting LO's tongue tie fixed completely saved our breastfeeding relationship, and also helped his very severe reflux. It was a huge turning point for us. After the procedure, which barely seemed to bother him, he's gone from below the 10th to above the 70th percentile in weight and really thrived. And knock on wood, no more mastitis and far fewer clogged ducts for me.

My ped says there is a 30%chance of clipping helping baby. I was told she has a small mouth and very tight jaws in addition. I would go ahead with it but they said I had to do these exercises 5 times a day in which I press down in her mouth very hard or it may grow back and then, with scar tissue be harder on her to remove again. My ped did not recommend it be done by a dentist as he’s seen lasers that have gone too deep causing problems. All I keep getting is vague “no guarantees” answers. Did anyone else have to do, what seem to me, harsh exercises after?

I guess I have a lip tie (or had). I had a frenectomy last year where it was cut by laser because it's causing my gums to recede right where it pulls. It was really painful after the procedure for about a day...

If it's not an issue for your latch, if it isn't painful, I'd skip it personally. My niece has a bad one and her mother was miserable for a long time, and I will never understand why she didn't get it fixed. But I can't really see the benefit if it's not a nursing issue.

I don't know much about it, but DH is pretty tongue tied and was able to nurse as a baby so they didn't clip it, but he ended up in speech because his was delayed and now has problems with bad breath (yuck, I know!) because I guess your tongue & saliva aren't free to move around your mouth as easily so it can get funky quickly. He wishes his parents had it done when he was a baby.

@birdofafeather: no one ever noticed it or recommended that we clip it. Since neither baby had problems latching or gaining weight, it wasn't noticed at all until I read about it somewhere and checked my kids for it. I didn't even know about lip tie until @rachiecakes posted a pic of her LO's! LMW has a lip tie too. Haven't even checked Wagon Jr. Wagon Sr. just checked and he has a lip tie too!

So basically Wagon Sr., WJ and LMW all have tongue tie and lip tie and none of them have had any of them clipped. I figured if it wasn't causing any problems, why bother with another procedure? Since it wasn't addressed while we were in the hospital we didn't bother. The only negative I've seen is more drooling-- Wagon Sr. wore a bib til he was 3. Wagon Jr. stopped soaking thru bibs at about 2 or 2.5.

Besides, I kinda like that they have that in common with their dad. Haha. Our friend is a dentist and wants everyone to come in for frenulectomies together!

My son is slightly tongue tied. Our ped noticed it early on but said since he had no problems latching, we didn't have to do anything about it. Then we had a scare because he had a speech delay. At that point, I kind of wished we had his tongue tied fixed as a baby. The procedure becomes more invasive as the child gets older. It turns out that he just had a natural speech delay. He doesn't seem to have any problems making the necessary sounds to speak. But we did spend 6-12 months trying to figure out whether his tongue tied was affecting his ability to speak.
If I'd do it again, I'd have had his tongue fixed when he was an infant.

I would definitely do it! Like you said there are no negatives--and at such a young age it is a super easy procedure--takes two seconds and barely bleeds. I had my LO's tongue tie clipped at 2 weeks old (it was causing major latch problems/pain on my end) and I wish I had it done earlier! Having it done will definitely not mess up breastfeeding--it may help it get even better.

I would also check and see if your LO has a lip tie; they often go together.

@birdofafeather: My LO had his tongue clipped at 2 weeks old, but he was having poor weight gain and my nipples were getting beaten to hell and back! It was really no big deal and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

My brother had a tongue tie as well and had speech issues because of it. At around 4 he had it clipped and his speech issues resolved. Having his clipped was a bigger ordeal because he had to re-learn to eat and had to eat jello/pudding etc for several days. Also, he had to go to the OR and get anesthesia at that age. After having the tongue clipped his speech issues resolved.

So if there is any concern of having speech issues in the future, I would do it. It is an easy in-office procedure now, but becomes a much bigger deal if they need it later on.

DS had an upper lip tie and posterior tongue tie. We had them "snipped" by laser at 5w; found out from a lactation consultant at 2w. Until they were snipped he couldn't flange his upper lip to latch deeply, I was in severe pain when nursing, my nipples would come out of his mouth squashed (sort of like a new lipstick looks), and he would make a clicking sound the entire time he was nursing. The surgery was very quick, there was no blood that I recall and he nursed immediately. There were some exercises I had to do for about two weeks afterwards, basically sweeping my finger back and forth across the location, to prevent re-attachment. He is now 4m and is a champion nurser and I have no pain.

Both LOs have tongue tie. Can't stick their tongues out past their bottom lips, and it makes for a heart shaped tongue. Neither had latch issues and no speech issues for WJ yet. In fact his favorite thing lately is to over-pronounce his L's, because he used to say them like W's. So "living room" went from "wiving woom" to "luh-iving luh-oom". Hehe.

Wagon Sr. is tongue tied as well! He's almost 32 and no speech issues yet. ;D

Rowan has a slight tongue tie that the ped mentioned in the hospital right away. She doesn't have trouble latching (she's actually been a champ feeder) and has already gained back 3 of the 6 oz she lost in the hospital at 4 days old.

We made the appt to snip the tongue tie because its definitely still there and the ped said that snipping it now is better so it doesn't interfere with speech, etc. she said because Row is already a good latcher, it shouldn't effect feeding negatively and might even make her more efficient.

I've read a bunch of literature online and can't find any negatives really. It's seems like a quick easy procedure and that the sooner we do it, the better, but I wanted to see if anyone else had heard any negatives? I guess I'm nervous to do it breast feeding has been going well and I would hate to mess it up!

I'm going to a lactation meeting at my hospital this Friday to see what they say as well. The appt is not until next Tuesday so we have some time to see if it stretches and get more info.

Anyone else have their LOs tongue tie clipped? Early? Later? Pros? Cons?
