@Mrs. Pinata: I was told that if it's going to help, it's pretty fast. She's probably getting milk faster now, so maybe that makes symptoms worse? Zantac didn't work for DS, we switched to omeprezole which finally helped.

@Mrs.Someone: Yes, she's on Zantac, and she is spitting up less, but seems to have more painful gas in general. Maybe it's just because she's still figuring out how to eat in the new way? This girl is complicated! :)

We noticed no difference unfortunately, though it was a very minor tie.

Has she been evaluated for reflux?

It took N a little while to relearn to eat. It was probably about one week. After the week he was just fine. Same thing for E. They just have to relearn. Hope your lo gets better soon.

Hi everyone! When did you start to notice a difference in feeding/discomfort levels? Sweet P is doing ok in terms of pain from the procedure (we're still giving her Tylenol every 6 hours) and she's starting to learn how to suck differently, BUT she is still really uncomfortable at feeds. We're about at 48 hours after the procedure, so I'm hoping we notice a difference soon! She's actually screaming more about needing to burp than she used to, which is discouraging. :/

@Mrs. Pinata: our pediatrician was the same- said no tongue tie, and that the upper lip tie shouldn't affect anything. He also noted he doesn't truthfully know much about the subject, encouraged us to seek a second opinion, and was very receptive to hearing all about the procedure, once we had it done. I'm so, so glad we went ahead and did it.

DD had hers clipped at 2 days old, but I was told it was a minor tie. She barely knew since she was a very sleepy newborn. No blood, no pain management after. I'm not sure how much it helped with BF since I was and am still using a nipple shield due to my flat nipples. At almost 3 months now she is still nursing fine and can latch naturally here & there.

We had DD's clipped at about 5 weeks. The doctor spent like an hour talking to us and examining DD beforehand, but the procedure itself was only a few seconds. She breastfed immediately afterward and was mainly fine. We did give her about a half-dose of baby Tylenol before we did the stretches for the first few days, until the skin healed over. It took about two weeks to really improve her latch, but she was less gassy and I was in less pain within a day or two.

@Mrs. Pinata: was she also checked for a lip tie? They often go together with posterior tongue ties and can also be problematic!

We had LOs clipped by laser at 5.5 weeks. She had a posterior tongue tie and lip tie which is a bit more difficult than a straightforward anterior tie (thicker tissue so prob more painful too). She was cranky the day of and refused to eat on and off for the following few days. We gave her Tylenol. We got it done to help with breastfeeding and it did help a little but not a lot. Honestly for us.. Having it done is probably my biggest parenting regret so far because I thought it was pretty traumatic both during and after and ultimately breastfeeding failed anyways. That being said if your lo can't take a bottle properly that is a bigger problem than we were trying to fix with breastfeeding.

We took her to the most reputable lactation consultant in town so I really trust her that it's just a tongue tie. She encouraged the release. Our pediatrician didn't seem to think it was that important. I hope the LC is right! I don't know if it's anterior or posterior but I remember her saying It was a level 2, but I don't know what that means. And we will definitely do the stretches. :)

@erinpye: Oh I.hope we see the same difference! Sweet P sounds so much like your DD! One of us needs to be holding and.rocking her SO often for her to sleep! Especially from about 6pm-11pm or so. It would be amazing if that changed with the release!

Thanks everyone for your experiences! I hope we see a big difference too!

N had his severe tongue tie released at 10 days old. They clamped it and then clipped it with scissors. He cried for a minute then he was done. He still didn't latch well but he did stop sucking so much air. We also went back and had his lip released when he was 4 months old. I wish we would have done it sooner. He was so much happier once both were released.

E had a severe lip and tongue tie that were released at 14 days old. It helped so much and the pain was minimal if at all. I would do it again ( and likely will need to with future kids).

DS had his clipped at age 2 weeks at the ENT office with scissors. It was (apparently) really severe and he could not move his tongue out past his teeth.
1. If he had any pain afterward we didn't know it. He screamed when they held his head to clip it but as soon as they finished, Daddy picked him up and he stopped crying instantly.
2. Didn't give him anything at all.
3. Nursing sucked both before and after, can't speak to the bottle. I didn't really notice a difference but I'm glad we got it done because it was so severe it probably would have caused him problems in the long run.

Not much pain afterward at all, lasted less than a week. She was older, 6 months, so we used baby Advil. She had a posterior tongue tie and upper lip tie released with laser, and she was immediately a COMPLETELY different child. Her reflux vanished, she finally slept well without being held, gained and grew faster, ate in a relaxed state instead of all tensed up, the colic stopped, gas was gone. I only regret we didn't know until she was 6 months old, because I wish we could have had it corrected sooner. It's so very worth it.

Are you doing laser or clipping? Is it an anterior or posterior tie? A couple of tips: do stretches afterward for a week or two, to avoid complete re attachment. Also, if it's a posterior tie, it's almost never seen without an upper lip tie as well, so have both checked and corrected if necessary, because only doing one won't solve the problem completely.

Good luck- it's totally worth it

Sadie had hers clipped at the hospital when she was a day old. It was numbed during the procedure, but they didn't give her anything for pain after. The plastic surgeon said that there are no nerve endings in the frenulum, so it's not painful. She was bottle fed, and had no issues feeding afterwards! :)

D1 had a severe tongue-tie and D2 had a tongue-tie AND a lip-tie.

1. Both kids yelped and screamed/cried for 5 seconds. Immediately after the release, they get you to breastfeed on the stop to comfort and stop the bleeding (bleeding is very minor...just a few drops).
2. I used nothing for pain because once we were out of there, the babies were fine!
3. It worked wonders. Night and day difference.

We found out 2.5 weeks ago that (likely) part of the reason for Sweet P's fussiness and difficulty eating is due to a tongue tie. Poor girl!
Anyway, we had to wait 2.5 weeks to get in to a specialist to get it done "right."

For those of you with babies that had this done a few questions-
1. How much pain were they in afterward? How long did it last?
2. What did you use to manage the pain? Did you use anything besides Baby Tylenol?
3. Did it work? Did feedings and gas/burping, etc. get better? She's bottle fed so I imagine there will be less of a difference than with breastfed babies, but just wondering about your experiences.
