We found out our daughter had a tongue tie when she was 2 days old. I had a lot of pain with breast feeding so we checked with our pedi. No one in his office did the procedure but the lactation consultant we worked with knew of a pediatric dentist who did it. We had her's clipped at 6 days old, she cried for about 10 seconds and that was it. Plus it barely bled. I am so glad we had it done when she was small and it definitely helped decrease breast feeding pain.

Also, check the articles on this site (kiddsteeth.com) for all of the most up-to-date information regarding tongue tie, posterior tongue tie, and lip tie, tie revision, and aftercare. It's Dr. Kotlow's site and he's the world's leading specialist in the area. He revises with laser, which is what our DD had (we travelled from Seattle to Canada just to get someone who does laser because it's a quicker procedure, no anesthesia is needed, and it heals faster).

Ours had a posterior tongue tie we didn't get diagnosed until 6 months. Most of the time, a posterior tongue tie presents with a lip tie, which is just as important to revise, although more commonly missed, and so we had both revised. Made a world of difference. I wrote about it here: http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/high-needs-colicky-acid-reflux-babies

Oh, I should add....

What the hospital, our pedi, ENT, & pedi dentist that clipped it told us is that when they're born there are not nerves in the frenelum. As they grow the frenelum becomes thicker & has nerves & more blood vessels through it causing the need for being put under &/or having more complications.

DD didn't really act like it hurt at all. She was mighty po'd about being held down though. She nursed directly after & quit crying almost immediately. It was hard to tell if it bothered her the following week though bc we were dealing with other tummy issues... I have her Tylenol "just in case", but even without it she nursed just fine so it couldn't have been bothering her too much.

If I think of anything else I'll letcha know. :)

@BabyBruins: yeah, the LC said an option is to wait til he gets bigger. I just don't know if I can. Last breast feeding until that happens. We will be seeing his pedi on thurs for his 2 wk appt and will definitely ask her. If they can't do it in their office, we already have the name of an ENT who could do it.

@hilsy85: I had a LC tell me that my son was tongue-tied and his ped referred us to the ENT who recommended that we not get his tongue clipped. He was almost 3 months old at the time (6 weeks gestation - he was early) and breastfeeding was kind of painful, but only for the first 30 seconds or so. She said that since he could stick his tongue past his lips, it wasn't that big of a problem. The bf'ing pain subsided once he got a little bigger. His ped and ENT said they would re-evaluate when he starts talking or if it interferes with eating his solids (does not seem to be after 5 months of solids). And now that he knows he has a tongue, he can definitely stick it out.
I was all set to do it, but I would also get the opinion of his pediatrician and/or an ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat doc).

I was tongue tied until age 12 when I had it done and that sucked. My oldest daughter is tongue tied and I did not have it corrected. I have no desire to have her undergo that if it's causing her no problems. She talks just fine and her teeth are not effected. My nephew is also tongue tied and his has not been clipped.

Several of my doula-babies have had tongue ties. Once they got it fixed, it helped breastfeeding tremendously, and healing didn't seem to be very difficult. Most of them just expressed serious relief that they had discovered it and gotten it fixed, it made their lives easier and less painful.
I've had clients get it done anywhere from 2 days to several weeks old.

Good luck!

@sea_bass: Its not too late for him to have it done. I was 20 when I had mine clipped, although it wasn't really causing me any problems. I was having my tonsils taken out and the ENT said she could do both. Granted it was pretty painful, initially the frenulectomy hurt worse than the tonsils. But once the swelling went down (yeah, my tongue was swollen for about 3 days) it wasn't so bad. Once I could finally eat solid food again I did have to get used to my tongue being "free". I bit it quite often early on but now its fine.

@hilsy85: Hopefully you can get it done soon! Good luck!

DD was tongue tied and we clipped it at 7 weeks (couldn't find anyone to do it before then).

It made a HUGE difference for the both of us! It was much better feeling for me & it alleviated some of the tummy issues she had from not being able to stay latched & get a good seal causing lots of gulping and swallowing air.

We did give tylenol periodically until the little sore was healed but I'm sure there are other things you could do like sucking on a cold washcloth or something.

Yup! DS was tongue-tied. We knew to look for it though because I was tongue-tied but I didn't get mine clipped until I was 20. We got his clipped just before we went home from the hospital. It made such a difference. Breastfeeding was still kind of painful because we had to work on correcting his latch but once we got it figured out it wasn't so bad. But I also have flat nipples so the pain lasted longer than it normally should.

My good friend had 2 tongue-tied kids and she got both of them clipped. Her son, not until 6 months and it was a huge ordeal at that point. He had to be put under and all kinds of craziness. Her daughter got clipped before she left the hospital and it healed quickly and was no big deal.

We met with a lactation counselor today and found out that LO is tongue tied. His is not the typical kind, apparently, which is why it was missed until now (he's 11 days old). I'm pretty sure we're going to get it clipped. Has anyone had this done? And did it help relieve pain while breast feeding? It's very painful for me at this point, which the LC said is due to him not really being able to put his tongue in the right position.
