Claire's tongue was only working at 30% - she was 70% restricted. The poor thing was working so hard at every feed. She also gas quite a high palate. Her lip works and moves well, so the specialist was unconcerned with that one.

The procedure was quick, but awful. Lots of blood! Stopped quickly but nursing a baby with blood/milk/saliva pouring all over you is no fun. I should NOT have worn white today! Looked like I'd murdered someone.

Brave little chicken was SO good. She's had a few feeds since & is constantly playing with her tongue. It must feel weird for her!

My LO doesn't like the letdown on my left side and is always pulling off, making me spray milk everywhere.

I just had my son's lip tie released about 3 weeks ago. He is 7 months. It's later than usual, but I'm glad we did it! He wasn't happy at first but was fine after a few minutes. We gave Tylenol for a few days and had to do the after care. I hope the specialist is able to give you some help!

Thanks everyone for weighing in. It will be really interesting to see what this specialist thinks of it. The appointment isn't cheap - but honestly, I just need someone to have a good feel around in her mouth, check mobility, watch her feed, and not brush me off. If they warrant cutting, we'll deal with it - if not, I want ways to help her feed.

I actually have an okay supply this time, but I would hate to ruin that just because she's not feeding as well as she can be. Plus, I want to keep this chunky bebe girl growing! :)

Got my LOs tongue and lip tie lasered at 6 weeks by dr ghaheri. It made a huge difference. There is no reason you should have to deal with 6 months of pain. The procedure is very simple and LO didn't seem to be bothered by it much at all. The mouth heals remarkably fast. I think he hated the stretches more then the actual procedure!

My two older boys had lip and tongue revisions done. My oldest had his lip done at 4 months old and his tongue done at 10 days old. My middle boy had them done together at 2 weeks old. I agree with other posters there isn't a down side. Plus it's not a huge procedure either.

Definitely get them clipped! There is really no downside--at that age it is still a very minor procedure--will prob only bleed for a min, if that. And it is definitely not worth the pain for you--vasospasms are awful. And it coudl also be damaging to your milk supply, as babies with ties are often not efficient at removing milk from the breast.

@agold: I also am surprised that your doctor said it was not a minor procedure--it takes about 2 minutes to do and is really not a big deal at all. I'm sorry you're still experiencing pain.

Yep - I asked my pediatrician about it starting when he was 1 week old. He nursed fine but at the hospital the lactation consultant told me to follow up on it but my ped kind of brushed me off every time since he had no problems nursing. it wasn't until at the 1 year appointment she said oh yes he might be a little tongue tied, we went to an oral surgeon and he said he had a mild tongue tie but a pretty severe lip tie. he didn't get the frenectomy until he was about 18 months old but it was the fastest procedure in the world - we were in and out of the hospital in 2 hours! and there was virtually no pain for him. don't worry!

My niece had a tongue and lip tie lasered at 17 weeks. Instantly made her a new baby - so calm, no fussing, can eat and move easily. It was a simple procedure, no anesthesia. You hold baby on your lap while they do it. It can affect so much more then eating! Check out dr. Ghaheri online. He's the guru

A has a minor lip tie, but breastfeeding is going well. She does click when she eats sometimes. My ped wants to watch it and see if it needs clipping later. I have a friend that had hers clipped when she was 7 with no problems.

My son has a pretty substantial lip tie but we didn't have problems with latch for some reason...? The ENT said to let it be and when he was older and it was safer to do the anesthesia (!) theyd look at it again if I thought it was a problem.

@agold: I don't know why your ENT told you it isn't a simple procedure but we shouldn't have to deal with pain just because baby is gaining well. My LO had a great latch and gained well, staying latched was her issue and it was agonising. Getting it cut was game changing. I waited 6 weeks to get help, trying to tough it out and I wish I had of dealt with it sooner.

@jaguar: Does she or has she ever clicked?

@jaguar: my baby's lip tie and tongue tie look like your baby's. I saw an ENT two weeks ago and he didn't cut it since she has no problems eating and is gaining weight without issue. He said the lip tie isn't a simple procedure and suggested waiting until she's older to see *if* other dental or speech issues arise. But those issues aren't guaranteed to happen. I'm dealing with sporadic vasospasm pain. It's so painful when it happens but it's now only happening to one boob usually and not even every day. A steamy shower helps it sovmych. My baby will be 12 weeks on Friday. Two weeks ago, a private lactation coach told me she has a great latch despite the lip tie. The pain gets better and you get used to it. Although I do remember feeling desperate around 7 weeks also. But I'm so super relieved my baby escaped having to be cut, even if it means I have pain sometimes. I do appreciate a conservative doctor. So anyways, I hope everything works out for you and your new baby. Sorry you are having to wait. Someone here suggested I call and get on a cancellation list. Genius idea. Call every day.

Not personally, but my sister just went through this. Her baby was born sept 5th and didn't have her tongue and lip ties fixed until nov 1st. She got it properly diagnosed by a dentist after everyone else failed to pick up on the ties. She said the procedure was quick and easy, and recovery was fine. They had to lift the lip and tongue every hour during the day and the baby didn't like it, but things are fine now and she's noticed a difference in feeding / behaviors.
Hope this new specialist can help you!

Anyone have experience with being brushed off constantly by health care professionals?

After exhausting all of my efforts and being brushed off by hospital staff, midwives, home nurses, and just today our paediatrician (who told me to 'just try and put up with the pain and get to 6 months) ... I've booked a private consultant.

Only thing is, Claire will be 7.5 weeks by the time we see this IBCLC (and tie specialist) .. and I'm scared that **if** she needs it, the procedure will hurt a tonne more for her because she's older now and not in that newborn phase.

Can anyone give me any experience or advice? x
