I had my tonsils out when I was 20 and it sucked. Recovery for me took almost two full weeks. But I also had a frenulectomy too so that could be why it took so long. Just make sure to stock up on popsicles and avoid all dairy. Cold, soft foods will be your best friends during the first few days.

This was like the third opinion LOL. I saw an ENT doctor several months ago, who said they needed to come out. Now, both my primary doctor and my new ENT doctor said they need to come out. The new doctor had said he usually recommends the surgery when you get tonsilitis 4+ times a year, but I've been getting it every 4-6 weeks.

My brother had it when he was 16 and it looked painful.... granted, he didn't follow the instructions on making sure to drink fluids and take his medicine like he should have, so he was in more pain than was necessary.

I would get a 2nd opinion before you take the plunge to get it done. I don't think it's necessarily worse when you're older, just the fact that you are more aware of it...

I need to get mine out too. I am so scared. I hear good and bad stories. But the number one tip I keep getting is to drink tons of water throughout recovery so your throat doesn't scab up and keep bleeding. TMI?

I was really worried about this when I started getting it again as an adult and I had issues with doctors not wanting to say that what it was. The last time I got it I went to a new doctor and was worried she was going to say they should come out, but to my surprise she said that she would only recommend it as a last resort or I requested it. That really put it into perspective for me that it really is a procedure I do not want.

I would get another opinion and try to find out why you keep getting it. The several adults I have known to have the surgery were miserable for a couple weeks.

Has anyone had their tonsils taken out as an adult? I've been getting tonsilitis every 1-2 months, and finally my doctor has said they need to come out. Boy am I nervous. People keep telling me how bad it is as an adult.
