I think when most people hear potty-trained they think no more diapers. Yes that is the goal... but just because my 8 month old is using the potty regularly does not mean we are diaper free :) She'll still in diapers.. but whenever I change her I also give her a chance to sit on the potty. 80% of the time she does something. If she gave me clear "I'm gonna poop" signs I'd also do it then.. but so far we don't get those.

With my son it gradually grew into him consistently telling us when he had to poop (with baby signs first - then words)... and the final piece of the puzzle was him telling us when he had to pee consistently (around 2 yrs). It was never a high pressure thing.. and I never had him on a timeline.

Good luck!!!

Just wanted to chime in that it isn't too early! I had a friend who had her baby completely potty trained by 18 months. If she's showing signs and can tell you when she's ready, go for it!

C isn't quite to the point that W is at (go for it!), but I've been keeping an eye out for a potty for him. I saw one at Marshall's I liked, but it was gone when I went back to get it :( I want to have one around and have him practice sitting on it and be familiar with it for when he really is ready.

My daughter does the same thing, so we bought a little potty that she's welcome to use whenever she feels like it.

I'm currently dealing with the hell of too-early potty training in my (just turned) 2 year old niece. I nanny her one day a week, and I'm expected to participate in it, my carpets be dammed. It's really obnoxious - so please, if your child isn't ready, don't try to force them. Or if you do, at least don't expect your babysitter to want to clean poop up off the floor 3 times a day.

Not too early. My mom started potty training all of us (me and 2 sisters) when we turned 1!

I don't think it is too early. I (along with both of my sisters) was completely potty trained--not even pull-ups at night-- by 18 months!!!

My mom is a potty training wizard!!

Ok - looks like I might be picking up a potty after work :-) It would be a nice change for her to get interested in peeing in that, than peeing on my rug (I don't think that thing will last much longer after all of the washing - lol)

I agree with everyone else, it's worth a try! I was potty trained before I was 2, but not exactly sure how many months I was.

@babycrz: Ditto to all of this! If your LO is peeing on the rug/in the bath anyway, might as well put her over the potty so you have one less mess to clean up!

Never too early. My 8 month old pees/poops on her potty everyday. Just buy one (Love Bjorn brand) to have in the bathroom for her to explore. You can try sitting her on it before baths for a little while. You can read her a book or give her a toy to play with if she's needs incentive to stay still for a bit :) Another good time to let her sit on it is right when she wakes up in the morning or from a nap. Have fun!

I say it's never too early if your child shows signs! I would start by getting her a little potty and sitting her down on there before bath time every night and give her some time. If she doesn't do anyt thing, don't push it, if she does go... celebrate like crazy!

DD is almost 15 months, so it feels way too early. But, every time we take her clothes off before her bath, she'll either go over to the rug, squat and pee, or she'll squat/hover and pee as soon as she gets in the bath. I've noticed her doing it while she plays - she'll stop whatever she's doing, squat pee and then continue running around.

Should I take this as a hint that she might be ready? Or is this just something every kid does around this age? And does anyone have some advice on the first steps we would take?
