@lady baltimore: he choked on raspberries and banana when we did big chunks a la BLW, it was terrifying.... I would be way too nervous for toast, he takes huge bites and can't swallow. He's a maniac. He does loveeeee playing with he purees but def can't scoop with a spoon or toast yet. It's like he's not developmentally ready for his appetite!!

@QBbride: yeah I have been doing that more, good idea

It is quite a lot of food but I’d follow his hunger cues. I think it’s OK as long as you’re offering breast milk/formula before solids.

@pachamama: You also might try leaning in the other direction with BLW. Sometimes larger, firmer foods are less likely to produce a gagging/choking reaction because they are not just sliding down the way that fruits and veggies might. We gave my daughter lots of strips of toast, very lightly steamed broccoli florets, slices of filet, corn on the cob, etc. Also, are you feeding your son the purees? What about just plopping them on his tray and letting him dig in with his hands, a spoon, or an edible dipper (e.g. toast strips)? All of this will be messier, but it will slow him down a little if you are worried about him eating too much/fast.

@MrsSRS: yeah I was thinking BLW but we've had a few choking scares that really freak me out. I guess they need to be even softer (it was a mushed up strawberry I think).

Sounds like an excellent eater. I would continue with what you are doing. My ped said solids first before milk. I loosely follow this. Most of the time he nursed 45-60 min before a meal.

I feel ya on the always feeding someone with two kids.

I wouldn't worry either. I always just made sure to give milk first.

I wouldn't worry. But maybe lean a little more blw style if you're worried about intake? Then it's a little more work to eat and he will do more exploring. So breakfast would maybe have steamed sweet potato strips instead of the jar along with the avocado and banana, and lunch would have poached pear chunks not the pouch with the cheese, and dinner would be chunks of whatever you're having. If that doesn't sound fun then I say stick with what you're doing!

I wouldn’t worry too much either. I wish any of my children would eat as well as your 6 month old. Enjoy it before they become a picky toddler

@periwinklebee: thank you, yeah he's peeing and pooping well (if that's possible?) He's making up for my first son lol, who had little interest in... anything before the age of 1. including me.

I honestly wouldn't worry about it, as long as he's tolerating the foods well and pees and poops continue to be good. (I say this as someone whose child was quite slow to take to solids and I did worry....) I feel like there is a HUGE range of normal as to when kids pick up solids, and as long as the choices are healthy, they're well hydrated, and gaining well, there is no perfect formula (or anything close!) for how much they should be getting at a given point, despite what some sites online may say. That's awesome that he is taking well to solids!

@SweetiePie: true, yeah I also usually subscribe to the "baby knows what's best" philosophy. I think I should offer food always after nursing, I forgot that trick. Like nurse at 4 (he nurses for max like 8 minutes, has since birth) then do food at like 4:45?
Between him and my picky 3 year old and myself trying to eat clean and actually cook a lot, I am making food or feeding or nursing or cleaning up almost all day. 2 kids is no joke.

And it’s already a little fuzzy but I think somewhere between 6 and 8 months they’re supposed to reduce formula/BM on their own as they are getting more solids. So that might be what’s happening.

My doc always said feed them as much or as little as they want. Let them say when they’ve had enough.
I mean sometimes I use judgement and if I know he’s had plenty I’ll stop pulling out new stuff. But overall I let him dictate what he needs.

(This is my second son but apparently I still don't know how to feed my children?)
So my little 6 month old chunker absolutely loves food. Reaches for it constantly, gets so excited to see jars, won't stop eating whenever we give him anything. He seems a little less interested in nursing. He started solids at 5 months.

This is his norm:
Morning: 1 jar veggies, 1/4 avocado, some banana. Or like 7 oz of a spinach fruit smoothie
Lunch: a pouch of fruit, some cheese
Dinner: 1/2 banana mashed with at least a tablespoon of peanut butter, some avocado, a jar of something.

Should I ease up on the solids? I'm outputting a little less at the pump. He nurses for a shorter amount of time too.
Gahhhh
