@purkle: ooh really?? (brain development.) cool. Sometimes LMW's poops are greenish or grayish, but not always.

@junebugmama: COOL. This would really ease my mind in terms of worries about waiting too long between pumping. I'm enjoying almost full nights of sleep (Wagon Sr. is doing the night feeding!) and I really don't want to give that up! And so cool that you're studying to be a IBCLC... I was kind of thinking that would be a cool thing to do but I have no medical background!

@TurtleDoves: AHHH good point, if I do separate out foremilk I will definitely freeze separately for mixing in with rice cereal, especially since we're starting that soon!!! save those tears ;)

@BabyBoecksMom: yep, I wait for second (and sometimes third!) letdown, but lately my second letdown DEFINITELY produces less than before. This is probably why I'm noticing a bit difference in my bottles. I should probably just add a pump in somewhere in the eveningtime.

@mrs. wagon: That's how my milk always looked when I left it in the fridge for a day. It always turns a bluish tint and there's a tiny bit of hindmilk on the top.

When you pump, are you waiting for a 2nd let down? That will give you more hindmilk to help balance out the foremilk, if you're worried about the ratio of hindmilk to foremilk.

ETA: Different times of the day will give you different amounts of foremilk and hindmilk. The first few pumps will give you a lot more foremilk, and it will have more hindmilk as the day goes on.

Mine looks like that too. I mix several pumps worth of milk together before freezing to distribute the fat. But I think that's more of my OCD coming through than a necessity.

@mrs. wagon: noooooo :'( I shed a tear for dumped foremilk! I mean...you could always save it in separate baggies and use it when your LO starts cereal and oatmeal. You can mix it in there. It obviously still has tons of nutrients-it's just much less calorie dense than hindmilk so therefore less filling. I'd keep it;)

New studies are saying that fore milk/hindmilk are less of an issue than originally thought. When they have studied milk, they have found that the milk becomes higher in fat through out the day and so the first feed/pump will have more fore milk than the last. (logically makes sense). So if you are concerned, you may want to pump more at night. There is NEVER a reason to pump and dump. (studying to be an IBCLC)

I feel the exact same way when I look at my bottles (I'm also an eper). I read foremilk is good for the brain development so I just keep it until the pediatrician tells me otherwise. I'm also sick of pumping so I can't imagine dumping anything! I think if its way too much foremilk they get green poops??

@T-Mom: I just fill the bottles as I pump, so most of them are from one pumping session, and some of them have some from one session, some from the next. But I've been comparing and the bottles from the sessions after waiting 4-5 hours look the same as the ones after the overnight wait...

@TurtleDoves: I was thinking of just dumping after the first 5 mins of pumping or so, so that the pumping session will be mostly hindmilk... just not sure if it's necessary or not... I may experiment with this! I've heard about "double cream bottles" (haha, doesn't that sound yummy?) where pumping moms will skim off the cream and throw away hindmilk...

@Mrs Green Grass: This is probably what I'll end up doing. I'm getting so sick of pumping!!! :)

I think your lo is probably getting all the nutrition necessary, but if you're worried, I'd just add a pump...

Does your LO bF at all? Because you could pump dyer a feed when the foremilk is gone...then you will have a bunch of hindmilk.

Do you mix all the days milk together when you feed it to her; or do you make the bottle from the last pumping output? Maybe if you mix the milk together you will get a better distribution of the hindmilk..

So I'm exclusively pumping and lately my milk has been alarmingly blue. When it's freshly pumped (and warmed and swirled) it still looks creamy and ivory, but after sitting in the fridge overnight, the bottom of the bottle is seriously a soft aqua blue. Pretty much the color of the top bar here on Hellobee!! There's still a thick layer of cream on top, but only about 1/2 inch thick. I looked up why milk is blue and it's because I'm exclusively pumping and waiting longer intervals between pumping sessions, so there's lots and lots of foremilk.

This is fine in terms of nutrition since LMW is plenty chubby, but the past few days she's had seriously explosive poops and seems fussier than usual, so I'm wondering if I should do something about it. I'm pumping 4-5 times a day but sometimes I wait up to 8 hours between sessions (especially overnight). But I could pump more often (gahhh) or maybe try to siphon out some of the foremilk and dump it.

Any thoughts??
