I was worried about the too much fruit thing too, there is so much summer fruit now! I read somewhere if you feed a LO too much fruit they are at risk for more cavities. Can't remember where I read that or if it is true. I've been trying to make a better effort to roast squash and sweet potatoes and add to his diet throughout the week.

I had to watch the more acidic fruits, like peaches in the summer. I'd try to offer apples and pears in between, otherwise he'd have runny poops.

@hilsy85: Yeah, I think it's the ideal way for anyone to eat. I personally have huge carb cravings, so I eat a lot of grains. It makes me feel good, but I know that I'd eat fewer calories if I could shift the balance towards proteins and plants. I don't know if that's just the way I'm built, or if it's just due to life long habit. But regardless, I'm trying to guide my daughter a different way. And so far she's really into it. If she grows up and asks for more grains, that's fine too.

@hilsy85: Phewwwww. When I typed it out I was thinking- actually this may be crazy :)

@Beehive: We've basically moved into BLW in the fact that he's eating basically what we're eating and very very few purees anymore. But we do still feed him. I always put food on his tray or hand him slices and encourage him to feed himself but most of the finger foods or actual foods that we're feeding him I am putting into his mouth. It's the balance that works for us now. Eventually I'm sure he'll get bored with me feeding him and want to do more himself and then we'll reevaluate!

Too much fruit can give DD diarrhea or just a plain old stomachache. But it really has to be a lot, like a lb of strawberries.

@sarac: agree! I wish I could follow the same theory for myself as well :) I really want to try to stay away from carb snack stuff becoming a huge part of his diet...which then leaves me mainly with fruit for snacks because it's so easy.

@hilsy85: My food theory (for her, ideally for me but not in practice) is that protein and plants should be most of what she eats. I make sure she hits her mark in terms of daily protein intake (10 grams for a toddler), I make sure she gets good healthy fats, and then I let her fill up on plants. She some times eats grains in the form of toast, cheerios, granola, etc. But plants and proteins are the best foods, imho.

@Hilsy85: Thanks, that makes a lot of sense.. I think I'll try giving him more pieces of fruit!

@Running Elley: That's a good idea. For some reason I've been adopting the BLW method of letting LO feed himself any pieces of food we give him, but since we're not even doing BLW it would probably be beneficial for me to feed him pieces of food too, so he gets used to eating things with more texture!

@Beehive: We do a lot of finger foods and E gets a lot in but I also feed him a lot. Is that defeating the purpose? Idk lol. Like I'll cut up watermelon and let him feed some to himself while I'm feeding him some...with my fingers haha. I never thought about how ridiculous that actually seems..

@Beehive: He definitely gets it in his mouth (and usually all over his face as well! :) ). I find that really ripe fruits, like peaches, pears, and banana are the easies to start with...if I can squish it between my fingers then he can squish it with his gums/tongue.

I don't give my daughter unlimited amounts of fruit because eating on a diabetic/GD diet is still fresh on my mind from my last pregnancy. I give her fruit after lunch and dinner and the portions are small. She likes eating veggies right now but I'm sure that will change!

@Hilsy85: I just think it's great that you're doing finger foods! I have been slacking on that (in both the fruit and vegetable department) because purees are so much easier! Does L get enough "in" when he eats finger foods? J just mushes them around his tray and when he occasionally gets one in his mouth and swallows it he makes a great "uggggh" face.

My 21 month old eats about 50% of her diet as fruit. The rest is split between protein, veggies, and grains, in that order. She has a lot of energy and a healthy body composition, so I feel like we're doing a great job. The only time I limit fruit is when she needs to eat more protein on a specific day.

@hilsy85: This has been my main hold up with veggies too! I've had really good luck slicing cucumbers and carrots really thin with a mandolin slicer. Peas and corn are also very easy to just steam in the microwave.

@mewtill: exactly! Especially when they're ripe, it's soo easy. @Running Elley: I also feel like fruit makes easier finger foods! veggies are so tough unless you cook them (which is work, and I'm lazy... :) ).

@regberadaisy: Glad to know it's not just my LO! I mean, he does like veggies--I just feel like I don't give them to him enough, you know?

@hilsy85: Elliot looooooooooooves fruit! I also feel like I'm slacking with veggies lately because fruit is so easy and he adores it. Plus, at the age that they're at it is so much easier for them to grab and self feed. So no help but I'm curious too!

Is it possible for a baby to eat too much fruit? Lo loooves fruit, and with it being summer, there's a lot available, so he's been having a lot. I feel like I'm kind of slacking in the veggie dept because ripe fruit makes much easier finger foods! Is there a downside to too much fruit? Anyone else have a fruit fiend?
