Our LO's dentist encouraged us to switch to fluoride toothpaste at her first visit (we have a built in filtration thing so no fluoride in our water at home). We made the switch when LO was about 1.5 years old. She learned to rinse/spit well at about 22 months.

We used water until her first dentist appointment at 15 months, and since then we've been using a little smudge of regular, adult toothpaste per her advice.

@jojepie: DD sees us use the floss picks, so I bought the kiddo version of those. She lays down on the floor with her head back in my lap. She didn't love it at first, but now it's part of her bedtime routine.

We started using fluoride at 18 months, but she likes the taste of the non-fluoride better, so we do a little of both on the toothbrush. Most of which goes on her face as she closes her mouth in defiance ;)

@genarator: We go to a family doctor, who definitely leans towards the natural side of things. Since our baby has teeth (9 months old), she said we need to start using a baby toothbrush plus toothpaste.

We live in an area where there isn't fluoride in the water, so she recommended Kiss My Face kids toothpaste with fluoride. They also have a non-fluoride version. You want to stay away from anything that has sodium lauryl sulfate ... it acts as a pseudo estrogen, and can really mess with hormones.

@jojepie: It was tricky at first but I found DD was super intrigued when I got a piece of food out. So I would try to see if I find anything and floss that tooth first to show her the food. Then she would open wide and make me get all the other "yuckies" out! It became a game of how much food can momma pick out. Lol... it's a glorious job!

I use the jack n jill natural toothpaste. its organic, sugar and flouride free. I'm slowly teaching her how to gargle and spit, which she can do maybe 85% of the time, but she still swallows .... so until she can brush and spit without me worrying about her swallowing flouride, i'm staying flouride free. FWIW, she's almost 2.5.

@littleveesmommy: How does flossing work for you? I tried flossing my LO's teeth and he would not sit still for it. He only has 8 teeth though.

@blackbird: DD is 2.5yo and we still only use water. It's tough because DD is allergic to corn and a lot of toddler toothpastes are flavored with a byproduct of corn, so I have had no choice. I do brush her teeth very well twice a day and floss (if I remember). She also drinks NYC tap water which has fluoride in it. Do I NEED to use toothpaste?

My dentist said I could start using fluoride toothpaste now (we're on well water, so no fluoride in the water) and E is 16 months. Use an amount the size of a grain of rice. Someone had posted the question on here previously and linked to either the dental association's recommendations or the american academy of pediatrics recommendations. I'll see if I can find it...

My ped and dentist both said fluoride once a day starting around a year. We don't have fluoride in our water, which I think makes a difference in the recommendation. I think the general recommendation is not fluoride before 2.

When did your LO begin using toothpaste? Did you start with fluoride free or fluoride toothpaste? Pediatrician said at 15 months and fluoride. My dentist said not until age 2 and non fluoride. DD is 20 months so while I was in target I took at look at toothpaste and all training toothpaste is fluoride free and says ages 3+.
