Great article! It reminds me that we really need to eat more variety. We literally eat the same two or three main dishes and the same 3 or 4 vegetables at every meal. Blah.

@aprk: I thought the book was thought provoking. Something that sticks out to me in both RIE & Montessori as "missing" is reading. I don't think I would ever give up all the reading we do with LO! I really appreciate the mental motivation to challenge what I think LO is capable of, even at this young age, and when (and how) I should intervene when he's upset.

@808love: I think that is so important, especially because I've seen time and time again parents forcing the 'clean plate' (my inlaws included!)

This was my big takeaway "....Ellyn Satter Division of Responsibility where parents decide the what, when and where of feeding and children decide the whether and how much of eating."
I really liked this article and how it was laid out. I'm going to share it!

M is 14 months and already getting picky!!!

We try to do the family meals but it's hard with both of us WOHM and DH working till 9 a lot of nights. We try hard to do family meals all the other nights though and especially on weekends!

I need to push to eat at the table more often; DH often prefers to "relax" and eat in front of the TV. But I don't want that to be a norm for our family.

i like the tips! with our long days it's hard to eat meals together--we have breakfast together, but not dinner. like you, bedtime routine starts around 5.30. DH doesn't get home until after LO goes to bed. i've been sitting LO in his highchair and giving him some finger foods to play with while i eat a piece of fruit or some toast. then i try to give him purees. and like @T.H.O.U.: mentioned, if i'm giving LO finger foods (he's almost 6 months), i let him figure things out and play without being too concerned whether he's actually eating (because he doesn't).

Good article. One thing that has really helped with our toddlers eating is not forcing it but almost letting her play and experiment with it. For example, what happens if you squish the pea out of the green bean. or Can you lick this piece of meat? She likes to try out those new scenarios and usually she is willing to try it after that.

@scg00387: yes I did! Hah. I think it's good to learn about different philosophies - I'm totally with you :) what did you think of the book? I love a lot of the RIE stuff, but I definitely mix in some AP too.

@aprk: I'm going to request their book on interlibrary loan.... unrelated, you had posted about RIE in another thread, I think?? I just finished Your Self Confident Baby :) Pretty sure the librarians think I'm INSANE because I've checked out a ton of parenting books but I find the different philosophies interesting and I like talking about them with DH. And I miss being a student... ha!

@mediagirl: I so want to get to this... I'm hoping LO's sleep will shift around a little in the next few months - right now bedtime routine starts at 5:30 which makes family dinner tough!

This is off a blog I enjoy - http://www.100daysofrealfood.com/2013/07/08/top-10-feeding-mistakes-parents-make/

I was a SUPER bratty, picky eater until mid-college - there are tons of common foods I didn't try until adulthood because I was stubborn (like cherries.. mustard.. radishes.. cheese curds.. the list goes on) Subsequently, I think a lot about our son's relationship with food and how I'm fostering it.

The blurb about eating with your baby was timely, I realized that I'm always in such a rush to get home, get LO's food ready and get him fed before his nap he never sees me eat! So I'm going to at least eat something with him each day :)

What do you think of the article?
