Thanks for posting good tutorials. I am a pony tail every day girl but want to try to mix things up. I have long thick hair so hopefully it will work.

I am pretty terrible at doing anything with my hair, i've mastered the pony tail, but that's about it! :) I have recently mastered the top knot, but instead of using the sock bun, I created one out of an old sock... here's step by step in how i do it:
Put your hair in a high pony
Place the bun maker at the ends of your hair
Twist & roll your hair through the bun maker, tucking the ends of your hair under your bun maker, similar to rolling up pantyhose.
Continue this winding/wrapping motion, all the way to the beginning of the ponytail. It takes a few minutes depending on the length/thickness of your hair.
Pin any strays (you shouldn't need any pins to hold the bun as the ends have been wrapped under).
Set with spray.
And done! This is how I plan on wearing my hair during my delivery!

@mrs. bird: I have longer hair too and for me the sick bun was always a huge fail until I realized that I needed to tuck my hair into it first before trying to roll it down. Like shove it under the sponge first, then spread it around the sponge to cover it...then roll down. And I have layers so I have to use about 2-3 bobby pins at the end of the entire thing to get my stragglers. I don't know if that made sense? But my point is: it is possible but it's all trial and error until you master it. After that it is sooo easy and convenient!

I don't do sock buns but I usually end up with a top knot before I get home from work lol. I just gather up all my hair and move it up to the top of my head, hold it like your about to do a ponytail, but wrap your hair around your finger that is holding the pony, then wrap your hair tie around it. It's messy but it doesnt look sloppy,. I find that if I watch myself in the mirror I usually over think it and mess it up. So I do it, thend go see how it looks. I do it so often that I dont even have to check it haha

I used this messy top knot tutorial this morning (searching for one for you)..... It was pretty easy to do & WORKED! I've never been able to get the sock bun to work so I don't even try anymore. Lol

I have the pre-made mesh donuts like your last pic, sock bun, and Goody Spin Pins too! The Spin Pin is great for a smaller "top knot" look and stays really well, even in my slippery hair! If I don't use any other item to make a bun then dirty or textured hair is a MUST. Like if you only want to use pins, I suggest dirty hair or at least texturize it with some dry shampoo spray.

I suck at doing my hair but I am okay at doing a "top knot" or high bun (I don't usually put it right on the very top of my head...)

My secret is using those Goody Spin Pins. They are so much easier to use than regular bobby pins, and they stay put.

I can never get my hair to roll with the sock bun so I just tease the crap out of it (I also have fine hair @coacheswife123!) and swoop it around itself, like this tutorial, but mine isn't as big! http://www.hairromance.com/2012/03/how-to-top-knot-hairstyle-tutorial.html

My other secrets are: using a child's size sock since my hair is fine and investing in hairpins (they hold really well).

I do a top knot often, sometimes with sock sometime w/o. Key for me is dirty hair and teasing it. I've had best knots with a pony, flip hair over and tease the pony w/rat tail comb. Wrap hair around hand and secure with bobby pins.

@TurtleDoves: i bought 2 of those sponges, the size of the bottom picture, and haven't mastered it yet =( how long is your hair? i can't see the video you posted, but i tried to do it like i'd seen in a couple videos and i feel like i have too much length to wrap/tuck after. do you roll it down into your hair or put it at the base & spread it around then wrap & tuck extra? maybe i needed a bigger sponge or to do it differently than what i'm doing, any advice would be appreciated! i really wanna figure it out!

@coacheswife123: like a sock bun? I do a sock bun all the time but instead of a sock I actually use a hair sponge. I bought mine for $2.99 at Sally's :)

I like this girl's video tutorial:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIBMx3N-BJc

Here's a pick of the sock buns (I think they are super similar to knot buns) and how to, and the sponge that goes inside.

I love the look of a top knot and now that my hair is bra strap length I think I could do a good one ! But mine never look good or right. My hair is super thin so sometimes i tease the pony for thickness before doing the bun.

I can see this being a mommy hairstyle go to. Have you mastered the top knot ? How do you do it. Share your tips !
