The main issues are dishwashing and microwaving, any time it gets heated. We dont do that, so Im not too concerned.

We don't dishwasher wash or microwave plastic and try to use alternatives when possible. That's realistic for our lives and works for us. I love Pyrex!

We don't heat in plastic and were planning on not using plastic baby items whenever possible. As for cutting boards, we've always believed that wood is more unsafe than plastic because of the sanitation factor and because there's always the risk of splintering. It's so rare that we use plastic measuring cups and most of the time we use glass anyway. So basically this doesn't change our lifestyle much.

I had already started before that article came out. And thankfully we started before TTC, so we won't have any plastic baby stuff to begin with. Well, I'm sure we'll get gifted some, but it will be returned.

We just started slowly with our food storage items, then continued with things like utensils. I figure every item I get out is a step in the right direction, but I don't have to do it all at once. DH doesn't care really, but he's willing to go along with it.

We're also getting rid of our non-stick pans, which is expensive. But thankfully my mom had an expensive stainless steel set that she didn't use, and needed new non-stick, so she was willing to trade. I hate giving her something I'm not willing to use myself, but she refuses to give up non-stick, and her current ones are older and scratched, so at least my set will be safER, even if I don't think it's really safe.

I think I've already cut plastic use to my bare minimum so I won't be doing more. Once my baby is a bit older, we'll have even less plastic around, but I think it is hard to avoid some things for now.

@grizz: That's us, too.

I can't worry about everything, and since we've already done our best to keep our plastic usage low, I'm not going to dwell on DS using plastic sippy cups and straws and whatnot. We just don't have the funds currently to replace those items and I'm sure that the amounts of anything bad he could get from those items are low due to limited use.

We also never heat anything in plastic, which is easy as we don't own a microwave.

We don't use plastic in the microwave but I don't feel we can avoid plastic cups/plates etc at this point. It does concern me but I feel like there will be research citing dangers about every material we use at some point and I'm quick to freak outw hen there is; which stops me making balanced decisions. I'm trying to just use sound judgement and cut back where I can instead.

I am working on changing our food storage over to glass, but I am not going to change it all. Hubs and I both commute by train to work. Carrying the glass containers is MUCH heavier than the plastic, and it is a strain on my already-tired back and shoulders. I know that sounds like a stupid reason, but it is a genuine concern for me. For now, if I am only bringing one thing, I'll bring glass. But on the occasions where I need to bring in a couple of containers, it'll probably be plastic. And Hubs refuses to switch to carrying glass.

So for storing stuff at home, we're switching to glass....slowly. I do not heat up our food in plastic - I either dish it out onto the plate to heat it or put it into a glass container. But D will continue to use his plastic bottles and straw cups. I did read somewhere that there are glass straws available, but....yeah, D chews on his straws too much, so THAT is not happening any time soon.

We already use pyrex to store leftovers, and about a year ago we stopped using plastic in the microwave. So we use plastic for cold things and lunches, and serving food.

We still have plastic cutting boards but Wagon Sr. just read up on how wood is much easier to sanitize, so at some point we'll switch. I grew up with wood cutting boards and loved the thin, light plastic ones... but I guess I have to switch back now to the heavy wood ones.

The only change we are planning to make (started before this article) is that we are going to start storing our food in glass containers. We already don't microwave plastic. We will continue to use plastic bowls, spoons and cups for LO.

I think the main thing I'll be looking at is switching from plastic to glass storage containers. I'm less worried about things that just briefly touch food during a meal or prep like spatulas and measuring cups and whatnot.

I've been slowly switching to glass storage. It helps that the coconut oil and apple sauce we buy come in glass so I've been repurposing those jars. We are going to try to switch some of our baby stuff to stainless steel, but it's probably going to take a while. To be honest, environmental toxins concern me a lot, but the convenience of plastic is hard to give up.

Have you all read the article on how BPA-free products aren't necessarily as safe as we once thought?

Link here: http://www.ibtimes.com/bpa-free-plastics-might-not-be-safe-you-think-they-are-1559434

I don't want to be alarmist but we have a TON of BPA-free plastics for our two kids: sippy cups, IKEA plates and bowls, take and toss cups, spoons, bento boxes, snack traps, even teethers!

So what are we to do? Toss it all and re-buy everything in glass and/or stainless steel?

I'm looking even my kitchen supplies and realize I use so many plastics for my own cooking/eating needs - measuring cups, tupperware, oil dispensers, cutting boards, etc.

I know I can't get away from ALL plastics, but I can replace things that I think are used frequently...

I'm not sure what my plan will be...anyone already start tossing the plastic?
