@ms.janedoe: Turbo Tax is great even for doing taxes together. I think what I did was do everything as MFJ because that is what works best for MOST people. Then once you get everything entered you can play with turbo tax and change it to MFS and see what it would come up with. If you both make roughly the same amount it is best to do MFJ.

Thanks, everyone!!! It's been super easy in the past, I just dump my stuff into Turbo Tax and call it good; hopefully this year is relatively simple!

@Jennimac: Oh you know what I think we meant the same thing. i was just saying that I didn't think she could file "Single" She would either have to file "Married filing Jointly" or "Married filing Seperately"

@alie: this is what I meant to say!!! You file as married but either jointly or separately. We filed separately the first year and jointly the second year.

@MrsBrewer: you can! We did!
Edit: alie cleared up my silly head---you file as married, but jointly or separately. We filed separately the first year and jointly the second year.

You'll be filing as Married, but it's up to you whether to file Jointly or Separately -- which way will get you the most back depends on a variety of factors... filing Jointly doesn't always get you the most (although I think it does most often?).

We file Married/Separately.

We got more filing jointly. That said the first year we were married and filed, we filed jointly because we were both single. I don't know about yours since you were mostly single the year you were doing taxes. Maybe ask a CPA or tax prep place. This year we did file jointly and we actually got
Something back. I used to pay. Always. Not a lot, but still.

The first year we were married we did our taxes out both ways just to see and the "married filing jointly" status got us WAY more back.

I think for most people you get the most back when you file married filing jointly. I know there are a couple circumstances where filing married filing seperately is more beneficial though, but I think those are pretty few and far between.

Plus I think that if you are legally married, I don't think you could file single?

We didn't know which would be better so ran it both ways on turbo tax and picked the one with the better return. I think you have to file married for the year you get married but can do it separately or jointly. We did "married filing jointly".

OK, question. So DH and I just got married at the end of October. Looking forward to this tax season, should we file as married or single (oh man, plus there's all that, "married filing jointly/seperate" and stuff...)? I've tried my best to use the Googles to figure it out and I'm just sooo confused. I keep hearing condraticting things; some people say it's better to file jointly, others say it's not...

Help?! :(
