You don't have to do cloth diapering 100% of the time right out of the gate, especially as your're trying to determine what works for you.

If I had to do it all over again, I would have gone with an all in one system, rather than covers and liners, but that's just me.

We also CD and have been since LO was 4 weeks or so. I agree with others, look for sales or try a rental program if you aren't sure you want to CD. We use a mix of BG 4.0's, Freetime, Elementals, and a bunch of random pocket diapers I bought on Zulily, of all places.

ETA: we use disposables at night and if we are going to be in the car for a long time.

I am now CDing two kids and it really isnt too bad! Researching CDs online is extremely overwhelming. I watched for sales and bought a few different kinds (probably about 10). I found which ones I like and surprisingly, the cheapos are my favorites! And the poop thing isnt all that bad. I should add that we use dispoasables at night and while were out of the house.

Our lo isn't here yet but I like the idea of the trial at Jillian's drawers. They send you some aio, pockets and prefolds with a cover and let you try them for 21 days. The trial only costs $10 which you could easily save during that time.

ETA: it looks like the "catch" is with both the Nicki's and Jillian's drawers that you wind up with a store credit and not cash back since you pay the cost of the diapers.

@Mrs Hedgehog: we don't have a sprayer either! And it's no harm if the poop doesn't come off right away. So if your nanny doesn't want to scrape/swish/spray, she can just put the poopy ones in a wetbag for (lucky) you to deal with before you do the laundry.

We didn't start until around 6 months either, but at 18+ months, I'm still so happy we made the switch.

Order from a website that allows a trial period, like Nikki's diapers, and start off with a few different ones. Or just look for good deals on used diapers and buy a bunch right off the bat.

At 7 months, we nearly exclusively use BumGenius 4.0 and on a typical weekday we go through 5 diapers during the day and 1 diaper overnight (we actually use a fitted plus cover for overnight as my daughter kept leaking through all of the pocket ones overnight). I need about 20 diapers to be able to send 4 diapers to daycare, keep two spare diapers at daycare, wash every two days, and give time to line dry the shells (although you could put in dryer depending on brand and your own preference).

We are doing BLW so DD isn't actually swallowing a lot of solids yet. If her diaper looks chunky I will swish it....and I just bought a cheap spatula intended to be dedicated to diaper scraping.

just start!! I don't have a sprayer, I just swish. It's really not that bad, I promise. Do you have a local cloth diaper store or group where you could go see some of the options?

We used disposables mostly until LO was 8 weeks old. It was easier, and I wasn't in love with the diapers I had picked out (BumGenius). I almost gave up on it at 3 months, but I finally found a system I love (gDiapers and Thirsties covers with inserts). I was able to sell all my BG's for a decent price.

Our daycare does cloth, but they do not wash off the poop. I don't have a diaper sprayer. Also, most of the time, I don't wash off the poop (she's 4 months and EBF). For the times I do get the poop off, I have a plastic scraper that I use.

If you CD full time, it takes about 6 months to break even on cost. And you'll be diapering for at least 2 more years, so there's that :)

We also use liners, no spraying!

Many of the trials include several different types of diapers, so you get a good feel for different ones. I would do that before buying any.

Oh, and I would recommend getting a couple of different brands of diapers (All-in-ones if you are going for easy), trying them out for a few weeks, and then stocking up on your favorite and selling off the ones you don't love as much!

Everybody is going to have a different favorite diaper. A lot depends on the way it fits your particular baby.

I bought a stash of cloth diapers before LO was born, had a tough time adjusting to life with a newborn, and so ended up putting them out of mind. That is, until LO was 9 months old and my husband asked whether we should try to cloth diaper. So we started super late, but I loved them enough that we're still using them and she's nearly 2.

As for the poop, I also used liners. They are a godsend, as far as I'm concerned.

We use flushable liners and just dump the diaper into the toilet, no spraying!

I'm a huge fan of cloth diapering. We've saved so much money and I really don't find it very time consuming at all.

We switched to CD around 4 months when it just got too expensive with disposables.

I started small, just tried out a few diapers. I saw them in person and just picked from there. I figured I could sell them back if it didn't work out.

From there we just kinda went for it! We used the liners and threw away the solid poo and never had a diaper sprayer.

I have been thinking about CD since before the Hoglet was born and we are almost 6 months in and we just haven't done it yet. Disposables are so easy and who doesn't love easy? But they do cost a bunch. We have been saving by using Up and Ups which we really like but I can't stop wondering how much more we would save by CD.

I know a couple websites offer 30 day trials but I have no idea what kind we will like or how many we will need. I am also not 100% sure my sister (our nanny) will be onboard with the whole spraying off poop thing.

Any suggestions on how I should go about this?
