I do worry about this. Even if they dont put the toys in their mouth they still touch them constantly and then might put their hands in their mouth.

Some of the issues have to do with lead paint, which has been found on many toys that are made in China (which I think is the issue with some Melissa and Doug toys). Other toys (like plastic toys) are not always BPA-free. And some of the dyes/coloring on plastic pieces have harmful chemicals, as well.

@Thehistoryofus: I just searched spoons and most are actually low to none in toxicity. A lot of the outer packaging are unsafe, but the spoons themselves are. Such a relief since I just bought a pack (Nuby) for grandmas house. The results say MEDIUM but if you click on it, the PVC was only in the packaging and not the actual spoons.

My LO isn't one to really chew on toys so I don't worry about it too much. I do worry about feeding gear though. All of those plastic toys from china are probably the same plastic thats in all the bottles, pacifiers, etc.

A review on Amazon got me curious about toxic materials in baby toys. I would laugh when products state "no lead ..." thinking of course, there's no lead! It's a baby toy! But holy crap! Some things actually have lead?!!

Check out this site: http://www.healthystuff.org/
There's a search option that makes it easy to look for brands. Plus, there's a sort option that'll show all the highly toxic products first. Some of the test dates were a few years ago though.

I am appalled by the amount of highly toxic Melissa & Doug products out there!!!
