@katsupgirl: no real schedule. I keep one basket of cars/trucks out on the shelf all the time, as well as his farm animals and the food for his play kitchen. Then every day before his independent play time we pick 2 toys from the closet so he has some variety. I try to switch up what we pick so its nkt the same thing every day. After his playtime we put away all of the toys (usually we leave the house after that and when we come back it is nap time) Eventually I will leave out more but right now he gets overwhelmed if there is too much out and this works for now. He is also pretty good at helping clean up since there isn't much out. He is 21 months now.

I have one of each of those (the tilted bins and the sling bookshelf) and I hate them!! I moved the sling bookshelf to Wagon Jr.'s room.. mostly because it can only hold a few books. So we use them for his thin, large, hardcover paper (non-board) books for bedtime stories. It's still totally overloaded though, and I've heard that the cloth rips over time so you really have to be careful.

I also hate the plastic bins because it just puts the mess on further display.

I have the cube shelves from Ikea and I love them. They have these pull out cubes that are made from cloth and they're perfect for kids because they're soft, and easy to pull out. They come in all sorts of fun colors now but we have black and white, and the shelves are espresso. We have a tall one and a short one, and the short one is all books and toys. The bottom row of 4 are pull out bins (black, white, black, white) and each has a different kind of toy (dress-up clothes, trucks/cars, etc). The top row are all filled with books, mostly board books, and one cube is all coloring and activity books. I like standing the books up so their spines are vertical, but if you're in a hurry you can also just stack them in the cubes and push them back to make room for more. I really do love them! Plus we can use them in the future while that kiddy furniture you really can't.

@Mrs. Lion: what's your rotation schedule?

I'm currently using the changing table as storage with various baskets.

I have cube shelves and love them. I only have 4 of the boxes full of toys, and I rotate what I get out (I keep all of his toys in clear shoeboxes in the closet and pull out a few at a time to play with). The cube shelves are fine...I just pull the whole cube out when it is play time, and we put the toys back in the boxes and then I put the boxes back in the shelf for him. When he is bigger he will be able to put the boxes back. But I like that it is clear that the toys are put away during nap time and bedtime...it seems less tempting that way now that he isn't in a crib anymore.

@mauxie: I'd love better ideas too. Currently a few toys are in front of our never used fireplace, and the rest are piled in her "baby jail".

What kind of toy storage do you have? Toys and books are starting to crowd my living room!

I like the look of the cube storage with pullout boxes so that the toys aren't as visible but is that practical with young kids in terms of them getting the toys out themselves and cleaning up?

At daycare they do a lot of smaller/flat baskets so while things are tidied up, they're still accessible.

Does anyone have something like this? I don't like those colors but does the storage function well?
