@Smurfette: unfortunately our basement is where a lot of them go so it's just as bad downstairs as upstairs! We just need a total rehaul

We use big diaper boxes, the kind with handles that you get in the mail. They're super sturdy and so convenient that I've been using them for other odds and ends too. The only downside is that they don't really stack...

@edelweiss: It was a great deal! I should add that I have seen something similar on Walmart's website for less than $70 and that Ebay has several for sale for around $60. Much more reasonable :)

@blackbird: I just moved some of the bigger toys to the basement. Making room for Christmas (she is getting a kitchen) but we still have to go through everything one day when she is at school after Christmas.

Right now we have a shelving unit with 8 cubies. Toys sit in them and on top of it. Some cubies have bins to hold smaller stuff. She also has a princess tent that she doesn't really like, so it holds her princess LP castle and backs of blocks, etc.

I don't have a picture of it, but a bought a small 3 teir homemade shelf off one of those swap sites and I put canvas on it to hold LOs' toys in her room. The bottom shelf has books on it.

The rest of her toys are in the basement in totes and some in a homemade chest made by her great grandpa (just her dress up clothes since I don't want it to get all scratched up.)

@edelweiss: haha, they're just sooooo big...we keep them in a storage space under the stairs. Or behind the couch, where I don't have to see them. I just can't think of a better solution, I am all ears if you stumble on something.

@Tanjowen: wow, you found such a great deal on that!

@looch: how did you know i was talking about bruder trucks? we were in a toy store and my husband couldn't stop playing with the bruder trucks. so i found some on ebay...ostensibly for LO but i knew my husband would go along with the purchases because they were bruder!

I also have canvas bins, I use the ones from Martha Stewart via Home Depot. They're not big enough for his Bruder trucks, but for the small pieces, they're perfect.

@edelweiss: same boat we are in! We still have toys out from when E was 6 months old. It just is at the bottom of my priority list but I told DH that with Christmas (and a new baby) coming, it's silly to have so many out, when she consistently plays with certain toys

I have this one:

http://www.houzz.com/photos/12937749/Kidkraft-Kids-Toys-Storage-Plastic-Sort-It-And-Store-It-Bin-Unit-12-Primary-modern-toy-storage

I found it at a consignment store for $25 and I can pull a bin out per day and let him dig through it. When he gets older he can reach the higher shelves on his own too. I attached it to the wall of his playroom.

we have canvas bins from restoration hardware in the rooms but i use the big cheap 40 gallon totes downstairs for stuff. Putting toys away that she doesn't use is on my Christmas break to-do list. It just slips away from me so quickly

We have sturdy canvas boxes from Ikea, the square ones that fit in the Kallax shelves. They are surprisingly big and hold lots of bulky toys. I keep two in the living room, one for each LO, and they definitely keep their shape.

what kind of containers do you use for toy storage and where do you keep them?

i'm looking into the whole toy rotation idea and want to buy bins to hold the different items. i'd like them to be good for storage and sturdy enough that i can put slightly bigger items like trucks in there without worrying about the sides bowing out.

the 3 sprouts storage options are adorable, but i worry about the clean-ability of them because they are fabric.

what toy storage options have worked for you?
