Mrs. Train wrote a really great post on space and the solar system for one of her summer theme weeks - http://www.hellobee.com/2013/08/08/summer-theme-weeks-9-activities-for-solar-system-and-space-week/

@regberadaisy: Good call! We still have a few wardrobe boxes stored from our last move, and I think DH would appreciate this craft...

@Finfan: Binoculars would be fun; we go to the beach a lot, too, so I figure she'd use them in a variety of ways. We've been thinking about the planetarium, too! Our nearest one has a few children productions.

@Mrs. Yoyo: Moon in my Room is lovely; added to my list. I kinda want one for my own bedroom!

@rattles: Lots of recommendations, I love it! The Hape Discovery Center is *awesome* - we love the Hape brand, so this is totally going on her birthday list. I really, really dig your craft ideas, too!

Thank you, ladies!

My oldest is obsessed with outer space! You'll only want to invest in this if the interest sticks around for a while, but we LOVE the Hape Discovery Center. It's like a spaceship doll house, and it comes with an alien, two astronauts and furniture. It's her favorite toy. She has a rocket play tent that she uses with her sister (who is usually unknowingly cast as an alien, poor baby) that was a birthday upgrade to her box rockets. She used a space suit for Halloween and now uses it for dress up/pretend play. We have a floor puzzle of the solar system she loves too. Also, she still uses the constellation turtle she's had since birth.

Crafts: We made constellation lacing cards with a hole punch, card stock, yarn and markers, and those get regular use. We use black rice in a tub and do "moon digs" for fossils. I punched out stars from gold card stock and we glued them onto construction paper as constellations and painted water color planets with sun spots. I'll keep thinking...

Agree with the box as rocket ship, or if you'd rather get more elaborate, the makedo cardboard space pod kit. My son really loves Moon in my Room too.

Probably too young for a telescope, but what about toy binoculars? Should magnify the moon somewhat.

They also sell constellation projectors! My DD is similarly obsessed and I've been meaning to get her one. We are planning on taking her to the planetarium for her birthday also.

We use a big Amazon box once and let her go to town decorating it as a rocket ship. DH then cut one of the flaps into a wing and drew flames in. Itwas super cute and she played with that for a long time!

DD (2.5) has recently shown a huge interest in our solar system. She regularly makes her toys "go to the moon" and explore space, and wants to look at the stars through a paper towel roll, every night.

We've been borrowing space related books from our library, but I'd like to get her a toy or two.

Can anyone recommend an awesome toy, activity or craft that's gotten a lot of use by your little astronaut?

Thanks!
