Haha, I bring a ton of stuff for my son to entertain himself with. He actually looks forward to going away to see what new stuff I have bought for him.

Things that I have brought in the past at that age include board books with cards that you can pull out and make into puzzles (check Scholastic), small wooden puzzles, Plan Toy's Nuts and Bolts, a buckle pillow and a can of play doh.

We only bring a few toys when traveling since we don't usually spend that much time in the hotel. For an 18 mo, I would probably bring a few board books, a set of small stacking cups and maybe something like toy cars or small toy animals. And I definitely wouldn't bring anything you care about in case it gets lost.

It's kind of a big item but what about a small ride-on bike / toy? You could always pick up something cheap when you reach your destination and my kids enjoyed having something "physical" to play with.

When is your trip? There is only 1 day of rain in the 10 day forecast. It's been gorgeous here.

You guys are brilliant! The phone will definitely be a big hit. I will pack a beach ball, I'm sure we'll get a lot of use out of that too. Thanks everyone!

Some play silks? They don't take up much room and can be a cape, doll blanket, "hair," all kinds of things.

Last time we stayed in a hotel my LO was endlessly entertained by one of the hotel phones that we unplugged and left in the floor for her!

We've had luck with re-useable sticker pads and "memory cards" (she likes to match them). Also my iphone, heh.

We brought a drawstring bag of blocks, an inflatable ball and an assortment of Color Wonder art supplies. A magnadoodle was a big hit for travel time, and we also brought bubbles to use outside.

We reused a lot of the plane toys, but a new manga doodle was a hit on our trip. Will you have a car? I almost wonder if buying a new doll stroller at target there and just leaving it would be worth it- ours was $10.

We are spending 16 days away from home (our longest trip in ages!) and while I've planned for plane activities I am just realizing that I need a plan for time in our hotel. We will be in Portland so rain could keep us in plus we will be exhausted if we stay out all day everyday.

Any suggestions? I'll bring her baby doll and I'll use our trip as an excuse to buy some new books at Powell's when we arrive. Her favorite toy besides her baby is the cheap stroller from Target but that would be hard to pack. She's 18 months.
