I think building toys are great as well as creative activities that maybe change each time. I actually just saw a really cute idea where the mom put food coloring in yogurt and let her toddler finger paint with it! I think preschool age kids would love this as well (and you could give the older one some brushes, too).

Whenever my friend brings her 4 year old and 2 year to our house, they instantly gravitate towards the play doh and legos. We have an activity table set out for kids who come visit us with 4 small boxes underneath. We put crayons/coloring books in one, playdoh/cookie cutters in the 2nd, legos in the 3rd and some wooden puzzles in the other. They love the variety of things they can do. And I agree with Abbydabby, bubbles are always fun too.

I nanny my nieces who are 4 and 2 and some of the things they like most are: wooden blocks, playdoh and cookie cutters, bubbles, barbies and little animals (to play tea party, lol), and books! Those are the things that they play with well together. And I've found a lot of fun things on Pinterest that you can make with the stuff in your pantry, so you can change it up a little bit.

Oh, they also love music! I put on Pandora on Laurie Berkner or Crazy Frog station and they love it! Bubbles and music is always fun. :)

A friend of mine who lives in my building is about to have her third baby (a surprise baby they weren't planning for!) which will give them 3 under 5. I know this is a stressful and overwhelming time for her as her husband juggles full time work and the MBA program, so I'd like to pop down randomly throughout the week and bring her two oldest kids up to play with my own in my apartment while she has some one-on-one time with the baby.

We don't have many toys, and certainly not any that work well for the three of them. I don't like turning the TV on or just letting them play with the ipad the whole time, but there are going to be times when I can't engage with them constantly while they are here.

Any suggestions for toys I can purchase or boxes of fun things I can put together to entertain them?

I'd like to spend less than $50 on whatever I buy.
