@artbee: oh ITA about the sand tray. I probably won't introduce that till about 2. But a lot of hard, plastic toys say 3months and I'm still hesitant to give them to her. Or things she could catch her fingers in. And she's almost 6 months.

I feel like as long as I'm there supervising LO can play with a lot of the toys earlier then recommended. For something like the sand tray I'd just want to make sure LO was done with the putting things in her mouth stage. Still at 2 she will randomly do that.... but not enough that I would worry about it because I would be watching her.

I don't pay a lot of attention to the recommended age when shopping for LO, but I do if buying a gift. He just turned 3 and he has played with real LEGOs, for example, for a while now. I know he won't put them in his mouth, but I still watch him carefully when he plays with them. I'd bet most of our toys are way over the age recs.

With supervision, we have plenty of more advanced age toys, I only get them out when he has my full attention.

He loves plastic animal toys (Toobs) but they are 3+, I just watch him around them. He's not a toy chewer and doesn't put them in his mouth, so I'm less worried about him than a kid that investigates everything with it's mouth.

Also he is addicted to Matchbox cars, I just make sure they are in good repair and keep any eye on him with them to make sure wheels don't fall off and stuff like that.

Do you follow the recommended ages on toys? Some toys seem too advanced or dangerous still (though the age deems younger or appropriate), while others seem like LO can play with them a year or two before the recommended age.

I just scored a great deal on a sandbox tray. It says ages 3+, but my friend had similar ones at her 1 y/o's birthday party and all the kids seemed to love it. Hoarding it obviously.
