I donated some of DD's stuff (like stuffed animals she had never played with) and threw away some stuff (any cheap, junky, plastic stuff). Then, I boxed up about 75% of what was left. Right now, she wants to play outside, anyway, so I figure we'll swap outside toys for inside toys when it gets cold again. Her birthday is coming up, and I've already asked everyone to avoid buying more toys. Some clothes or books are ok, but we're overflowing with toys!

We personally don't have any storage space so we ended up doing a hybrid. We donated the stuff that LO never showed any interest in and we didn't want to keep for the next baby (mainly stuffed things). For the larger items (swing, exersaucer) we found friends who were or had just had babies and loaned them out. By the time our next LO arrives in September and is old enough to use the item, their LO will have outgrown it. After our second is done with the items we will most likely sell them because we don't plan on having additional children.

We have a huge attic, so I plan on storing toys for the next kid. Can you rotate toys every week or two? I usually try to pull out a different toy or two each day to try out. The nice thing with LO's is that it is a *new* toy if they haven't seen it in a little while!

If there are some things that you both really enjoy then I say keep it. My ds is 10, I thought I was done so I sold everything once he outgrew it. I am absolutely kicking myself now, especially since a lot of the items are not made anymore and really hard to come by ($$$)...
Before I sell anything besides clothes one of us has to be fixed so I know for sure ;)

If you like the toys, then I would store them in age-specific bins and rotate them out so he's getting new toys every couple of weeks. He won't remember he saw that bin of toys four months ago when they rotate back around ;)

My friend is having #2 about 2.5 years later and she stored EVERYTHING. I saw her unpacking stuff this weekend and I really don't want to end up like that.

I would store them. Then bring them out after a month and he'll tihnk they're new again. We're saving ours for when we decide to have baby #2, I don't want to have to buy things all over again.

i got rid of more than 50% of Charlie's toys when I got pregnant with Olive and I have no regrets. This is a great post I read recently how it's much better for your child to have less toys:

http://joannagoddard.blogspot.com/2012/05/motherhood-mondays-simplicity-parenting.html

I'm in the middle of getting rid of more of Charlie's toys and books. Your younger one will have your older child to play with. So other than some infant toys that don't take up much space, I got rid of everything that was big.

I would store them. I have a bunch of stuff that LO hasn't used but won't consider giving them away until I'm done having kids.

I would store them. Then you can always rewrap them and give them to him again like they're new. My mom did that for us and we didn't figure it out!

Hello! I really need to start posting more!

My son is 21 months old and I would say he only plays with 15% of his toys. Yet I feel his toys take up 50% of our house! I always think he will start playing with something else he isn't playing with now - this sometimes happens - sometimes not.

So my question is - do I store the toys he doesn't play with, get rid of them (I am planning to have a second down the road) or just leave them out and hope he may like to play with him down the road?

What do you do?
