@MusicaV: Dollar aisle ones from Target, they aren't very heavy so they can sit on her lap but still have plenty of picture to color and I got a couple different ones so we mixed it up. I got ones with characters she's into right now (Minnie Mouse, Doc McStuffins, Sofia the First.)

@MusicaV: nope! It's crazy I've been on dozens of road trips with my kids and every time j worry about nighttime sleep and they are never effected. I think they are so tired from the trip they sleep well at night!

@matador84: Did you have any problems with nighttime sleep after the car naps?

@rattles: @LuLu Mom: What size coloring books did you use? We've never used any, and some of the ones in the stores are huge!

We have done several 4-6 hour road trips this summer at same age. I packed a backpack for him and got out a small toy each hour or so. He napped a lot. Small trucks, cars, water pen coloring books, iPad movies (a special treat he never gets) and he loved lots of books!

We haven't done that long of a trip, but have done 3-4 hours. We bought her this and she played with it for a good hour: http://www.target.com/p/b-toulouse-laptrec-tomato/-/A-14533268#prodSlot=medium_1_10&term=b+toys

We also did colors (big ones), colored pencils, coloring books, stickers, lots of snacks. She also loved playing with an old cell phone, that kept her busy for awhile too. And a doll and bottle so she could feed the baby.

On the way back all she wanted was the ipad with a movie, so we indulged since she was super tired and whiny.

We just did a 21 hour drive with our 19 month DD this month. We split it into three days on the way there and two on the way back. I got her a little backpack and filled it with wrapped treats. I doled out a new little wrapped present every hour or two. Most of them were dollar spot/store finds. She got a new box of (washable) crayons, two coloring books, two sticker albums and an extra pack of stickers, a tambourine and clacker, a light-up wand, a toy car, three new books, a new kid's cd, and a magnadoodle. The magnadoodle held her attention for the longest by far, so I'd definitely suggest one of those. Plus it's mess-free, so it's a great one for when you're not in the backseat. Wrapping whatever you bring adds another activity/level of excitement too. We rarely do screen time, but we did download a few episodes of Daniel Tiger to our phones for when things got really desperate. We left crazy early in the morning and got in a good stretch before she woke up then stopped for sit down breakfast and lunch. We picked a place with a play place for the latter so that she could blow off some steam. Good luck, and let me know if you have any questions!

We're going on a 16 hour road trip and I am looking for toys or activities to keep DS busy and entertained. We will split up the drive over two days going there, but do it in one day coming home. We will likely have someone in the backseat with him for at least part of the drive.

What would you recommend to bring?
