we were just in this same situation! we went with the melissa and doug activity table (white with green table top). it is large enough for him to do a number of activities, including trains!

we didn't want to drop a ton of cash on a train table and him be bored with it quickly.

We have a similar setup to @californiadreams and find it handy to have both. We went with the Imaginarium train table from TRU since it includes the tracks and a few trains. I also agree not to glue down because my kids love configuring the tracks. We keep extra tracks and trains in bins under the train table.

We have a Melissa and Doug table with chairs. The kids love having their own table to do arts and crafts.

We had a table that is similar to the one Mamaof2 posted, I found once you got beyond tracks and into the buildings, the table was limiting and we'd just build on the floor.

I saw this, though, which is cool:

@ShootingStar: ours was a hand me down so not sure of brand - see pic below

A friend of mine didn't want them taking the tracks apart so they configured it and glued it all down - I do NOT suggest this! The little bit my kids did play with the trains the fun was in building new tracks!

i have two tables. got them a year apart. We have a small kid sized table and chairs from Ikea that I got DS for his 2nd birthday. He eats there a lot and has also done arts and crafts and played with stickers and play doh.

Then last week, we got him a massive train table (the Thomas one) for his third birthday and he loves it. The pieces are not glued down, but they stay there - so it basically stores all the tracks and trains. He has to stand to play as the kid chairs would be too small, so i see the 2 tables as totally different purposes and functions. Also because the train table was so expensive, i wouldn't want him eating or doing crafts there for fear of ruining it! I think it will strictly be a train/toys table.

What about something like these (they look sold out but you could find else where) a train table with a top over it

@Mamaof2: Oh, I didn't really think about gluing it or not. I'm new to this whole train thing. Do you have one the kidkraft tables? Those seem to be all I'm finding online.

Do you plan on attaching (gluing) the train track down?

If not a train table works great! We would store all the train stuff in bins under the table and then use the top for puzzles and games when needed

Lately DS has been into playing with trains. We have DH's old collection of Brios that we keep in a file box. It's not really a great solution. DH mentioned last night he wants to get DS a train table so it's easier to play with them. It would nice to have a better way to store them, too.

But I would also like to get him a small play/craft table where he can color, play with sticker books, etc. It seems silly to buy two tables, but I can't find any one table that looks like it will do the job of both.

Anyone have any suggestions? Should we just buy two tables?
