Our neighbor behind us has a pack of dogs who used to bark all the time and I was losing my mind. He finally trained them by spraying them with the hose every time they had a fit while telling them to hush and told us if they start barking when he's not home to spray them with our own hose and do the same! Kinda weird but it worked, they rarely bark anymore.

Training a dog not to bark is tough! It's such a rewarding behavior, and definitely a pack behavior as well. But it can be done! You can check out some good youtube videos for ideas. Here's a helpful one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jp_l9C1yT1g

I heard the key is teaching them to bark on command... So then you can teach them not to bark!

They have those high pitched no bark trainers (if a dark barks or really any loud sound) it emits a high pitched noise that's unpleasant to dogs. I don't know it really works though.

You could train for a "hush" command and give a treat or something when they stop barking. I imagine they are pretty food driven.

@mrbee: we did. I think it helped them calm down. We lived in a small apartment at the time so they didn't have to do far to get to their beds. I say we, but DH did most of the work. He's definitely the pack leader around here. When he gets home I'll ask if he did anything else. We started with the chihuahua when she was a puppy. I'm not sure about the big one though. He might have already been grown.

@Mrs. Pickle: Thanks, that gives me hope! How did the training process work... if they barked, you would bring them to their beds right away and hush them?

Yeah. We would tell our dogs to hush and make them lay down on their beds when they started barking at something going on outside. Now they only bark if something catches them off guard, like if someone appears in the door that they didn't notice walk up or that they don't know. I have a chihuahua and really didn't want her to be constantly barking.

Does anyone have experience with this? We've adopted some local strays and they are very nice, except one of them will start to bark (always the same one) and then all the others join in and it quickly becomes a barkfest. Then the neighbors' dogs join in and all you can hear is a chorus of barks and howls.

Has anyone had luck training a dog or dogs not to bark? If we could figure this one out, it would be life changing!
