I have a technique: the car nap has to have been at least 5 minutes long and not more than 30, give or take. Unbuckle him carefully; his arms should be limp. Then, if he stirs, I often whisper 'we're home, honey, I'm going to take you inside,' while scooping him out of the seat. I place his head against my shoulder and my 'free' hand over his exposed ear. Walk into the house with his face pointed away from the sun, if possible. Open door carefully (you have to put your keys in the correct pocket!), go in quietly, and put him down gently in bed (he sleeps in a floor bed). If his eyes open, put your hand on his chest/rub his back until they close again. Et voila! The art of the car nap transfer. ;) </p> <p>I think the critical piece is doing the transfer when he's really out. If its been like 2 minutes, it's harder, and longer than 30 or so, he will sometimes wake up. I'm guessing this has to do with his sleep cycle. </p> <p>Like I said, we don't have a garage, so I imagine this would be even easier with one. Also, we have stairs to go up--just try to keep the jostling to a minimum. She will wake up as soon as we try to move her, no matter how long she's been sleeping. I've only woken him up accidentally once or twice in the past year. We even got rained on once (no garage and I had no umbrella) and he slept through it! Once you unbuckle him, he's wide awake even if it's only been 5-10 mins. Today, it was 20. My husband insisted on transferring him even though I told him it doesn't work and even though I was willing to read my kindle in the car. I'm so pissed that he is going to have a 20 minute nap today and it could have been prevented. </p> <p>Does your LO transfer at nap time? </p>
