at what point do you think i need to actually brooch the subject.... When i tell them i'm pregnant? Before I go on Leave? When I'm ready to return from leave?

I'm hoping for one of the last 2.... As i'd like to see how our budget shakes out once we actually settle in our new house and see where we land with 2017 reviews and raises

Our factory workers are in house 7am to 3:30pm and my dept we have flex time as long as we work 40 hours. Some of my dept mates come in at 7 some at almost 10, some leave at 4 some leave at 6:30. Kids need to be at the school by 9:15. So i think if i went with option one maybe 9am to 3:30 might be the ideal scenerio

@MrsBeluga: Thanks for your insight in a "been there done that" way.... no one in my office has attempted this and I'm nervous as to how they will react. I just wonder if the one extra day off is enough of a trade off for four stressful 11 hour days. Or if 5 shorter days will still make me want to hide under the covers every monday.

I would do 4 days a week - that way its less time commuting and you save some $ on DCP

Last time I did Option 1 (for 9 months before returning FT when LO turned 1). This time I am going to push for Option 2. The problem with Option 1 is getting "dressed" for work takes time, there is still a commute, and I would say 10% of the time that 6 hour day gets stretched into a 6.5/7 HR day anyhow. Option 1 was less stressful for pumping and made my bosses happy that I was physically in the office each day, but Option 2 sounds amazing knowing that I have essentially a 3 day weekend and no commute on a Friday (can take an hour to get home).

The only other way i can think to save my sanity is to switch to a daycare closer to our new home so that hubs can do pick ups. But everything in our new area is almost twice the rate of our current school and we love LO's school.

@regberadaisy: its about $20/per child (so $40 less in total) to send them 4 days instead of 5 its about $120 less take home pay a week if i drop down to 30-32 hrs instead of 40

@Jadj13: our daycare does it a little differently you have to commit to at least 3 days a week. with my first we did just 4 days a week for the first year as my mil watched her on mondays. It was about $20 less a week

They consider part time pick up before 12pm

I currently work part time (3 full days a week), my only caution would be research what daycare considers part time (& the rates).

Most of the daycares I contacted when going part time charge the same for 4 or 5 days. Typical price breaks are at 2days/wk or 3 days/wk.

Also, some daycares don't do part time for infants since many facilities don't "crib" share and don't want a crib sitting empty some days.

I was suprised when I called some of my top choices and learned these things.

Would the pay lost equal one day of childcare for 2?

Background: Both my husband and I are WOH parents. we both have jobs we enjoy though my DH makes more than I do, my salary is still necessary for our current spending. My LO is almost 3 and her daycare/preschool is about 10 min from my office. We love her school and how reasonable the rate is but i'm solely responsible for drop offs and pick ups. It takes me 1 hour from when i leave my front door to when i get to my desk and vice versa going home. I leave at 7am and get home at 6pm hubs leaves before 6am and is home by 5pm. I work in a factory setting where I interact with the product and the operators on a daily basis. I leave at 7am and get home at 6pm. I'm currently pregnant with #2 and due around the first of the year, I'm hoping to take 12 weeks again. I havent yet told anyone in my office.

When i return to work I would like to work less than 40 hours at least temporarily. I struggled A LOT the first year back with my LO and I'm anticipating similar (Horrible sleep, stress from pumping, anxiety). Logistically, I can't decide how to approach this. I do not have the option to work at home. I'm also paid hourly not salary and we get our health benefits through my husbands work.

Option 1: work 5 days but shorter hours. maybe 6 instead of 8. Pros: I will miss rush hour traffic, I will be in office everyday to field questions, Less stress. Cons: still have to pay full 5 day daycare payments for 2 kids and my pay will be only 3/4's of what we're currently working with.

Option 2: Work 4 full days and 1 day off. Pros: daycare payments would be less since they would drop to a 4 day week. Only have to do the rat race 4 days. could possible split it up so I work MT off W work TF. Cons: not available for dealing with issues everyday, its still a very long 4 days.
