At 7 months my DD was eating about what your pediatrician recommended. At 8.5 now she's eating that plus another pouch/jar and some table foods and nursing about 6-7 times a day. And still only in the 15th percentile, so I don't think she's overfed! I would follow your LOs lead. Mine opens wide when she's hungry, and shoves the spoon away when she's done or starts to play with her food.

As for starting table foods, she did the same thing your LO did at first but just the other day it seemed to click and now she's much more interested in texture. She'll still gag with lumpy puree, but will feed herself puffs, broccoli, ground turkey, bits of fruit, etc. I think it just takes time.

@MrsADS: we dice up some of what we're having to something between pea and blueberry size and just dump it on the tray. At first LO plays with it, then practices picking up, then it starts to make it to the mouth. We started at 7 months and by 9 LO2 can feed herself a whole meal. Maybe give it a try, and if it doesn't work you can always explore OT for help with textured food?

That does sound like a lot to me, but definitely do whatever you think is best. We were doing at that point like a jar a day. We did start with doing dinner, then added in breakfast and lunch. My DH is paranoid of choking, so we have been slower on table foods. Now at 9mos. he still gets all formula, but we do a jar of fruit at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We will sometimes cut up some of our dinner and add it. Then he eats a shit ton of puffs.

It does seem like a lot. I remember looking at the Gerber site and their portion sizes was just insanely large. We also started at 6 months. LO didn't care for the baby cereal at all so we didn't push for him to eat it. This did not work well for us, at his 9 month check up his iron levels were a little low and he had to be on iron supplements for 6 weeks. I asked my pediatrician what cause him to have low iron levels and she said that because he was EBF that after 6 months breast milk doesn't have enough iron to meet a baby's needs so the cereal helps supplement the rest of the iron. Well I really wasn't giving him cereal since he didn't like it. Had I known that I probably would have introduce the baby cereal at 4 months instead of 6 to give LO time to adjust.
However, I've heard of other parents not giving their LOs baby cereal and their LOs didn't have any issues with their iron levels.

Thanks all! Sounds like just following his cues is the way to go and glad to see there's a huge range of eating patterns for babies. He has awful reflux so I'm careful not to overfeed him. And on a bad day he even throws up solids.

How did you add in table food? Just start giving them tiny pieces of your food? I have tried giving him little bits of smushed avocado and banana and he makes an awful face and spits it out. LOL. I am nervous about the choking issue.

I was actually nursing him last night and he choked ON BREASTMILK! Like, he pulled off, started coughing really hard, then suddenly stopped coughing like he was choking - I flipped him over on his belly, whacked his back and he projectile vomited everywhere and started screaming. I think it was just a freak thing, but he was actually hospitalized as a little baby due to suspicions of aspiration from his reflux, and we stayed up many nights just watching him because he had choking episodes. So I could not deal with the choking/gagging stuff with BLW after what we've been through.

So, Ty was a giant fatty, because at 8 months old, he was getting oatmeal for breakfast, a pouch at lunch, and 1-2 pouches at dinner, plus whatever food he could cram in his mouth. Even now, he eats a gross amount of food and I'm often refilling his plate. So your ped is recommending oatmeal, and a pouch at lunch and dinner. We started with just dinner, then added lunch, then breakfast, but it all happened quick because he obviously wanted food. All babies are different so there's no hard and fast rule saying yours should or should not have X.

Your pediatrician's recommendation seems like a lot to me too, but K has never been very ravenous. At 7 mo, he was having about 4 oz of food/day - so about 8 tablespoons of solids for the day. Sometimes he'd eat the majority in the morning, but more often it was at night (which was fine with me, because he slept better then, ha.) Starting around 7.5 months, we also offered him puffs and whatever we were having for dinner (like diced green beans, little pieces of cheese, a ramekin of soup, etc.) At 8 months, he's still not very into non-pureed food though - he'll have a piece or two, but gags and spits it out most of the time.

My girls took to solids quickly. At seven months we were doing three to four pouches a day plus oatmeal cereal in addition to table foods.

I will preface this by saying that DS2 is an eating machine.

At 8m old now, he eats 2 of the big stage 3 (chunky) during the day (one at lunch and one at dinner). He also has some of whatever we're eating for exploration. During the day he might have some puffs or teething biscuits as well.

I have no doubt in my mind that he would eat more if we gave it to him too. He is hungry ALL the time, it's crazy.

I'd just follow the cues of your baby. They're all different!

@MrsSRS yeah, I'd say right now he usually eats about 2 tbsp, sometimes maybe 3, twice a day.

Yeah that's a LOT of baby food. At 7 months i think we did a tablespoon or two twice a day of whatever we were eating, chopped small and put on the tray to explore and taste when we fed purees. Then we increased slowly as LO wanted more.
Ok, at 9 months I think LO2 is a pretty average eater who probably consumes 1/4-1/2 cup of food at most meals. Here is a regular day:
Breakfast: 1 diced sausage link, 1/4 c diced peaches, 2T plain whole milk Greek yogurt
Snack: a pretzel stolen from LO1
Lunch: 1/2 diced chicken thigh, 1/4 c chopped roasted veg and sweet potato
Snack: 1/2 fruit and veggie pouch
Dinner: 1/2 avocado, 1T garlic hummus, 2T black beans, tastes of the rest of our food

My son is 7 months old. For multiple reasons BLW did not work for us. We started primarily purees right at 6 months, so he's been eating solids consistently for about a month. We usually do them 2x a day. He does eat fresh food from a mesh feeder bag (avocado, bananas, bluberries, sweet potato, etc). He does pretty well with purees but doesn't eat a ton. I want to make sure he gets his primary nutrition from breastmilk and solids just as a supplement. Plus, since we aren't doing BLW, I do not want to "overfeed" him - want to follow his cues as much as possible so he learns when to start/stop eating.

If you started with purees, how did you transition to table food and when? Also at 7 months, how much was your LO eating? I know that since we started at 6 months, he probably won't be eating as much as a baby who started solids at, say, 5 months. Our pediatrician said "he should be eating 3-4 tbsp of baby oatmeal/cereal plus a jar of fruit/veggies 2x a day" which seems like a ton. PLUS I don't really do cereal (we do occasionally do a little oatmeal mixed with breastmilk which he loves). So we aren't really following that advice.

Would love to hear what worked for you if you started with mostly purees!
