I moved DS around 2.5 because he was so big. He never tried to climb out of his crib and he treated his bed like a crib for like a year. We had no sleep disruption with the transition. My daughter had a more typical transition. How about just using the mattress you will eventually use with the big bed and doing a floor bed for a year, then using the big bed with pool noodles under the fitted sheet on the sides.

We waited to convert lo1's bed until she was about 2.5, when she started refusing to sleep in it (she would fall asleep on the floor and then we'd transfer her which was difficult!) I'd wait until she's really ready before switching.

@tlynne: @Alba4: I was firmly convinced to skip toddler bed since so many people say LOs grow out of them fast and they aren't worth the money. Then someone in my local group was giving away an Ikea toddler bed for free, and the thing is 63 inches long! I think not all toddler beds are the same length. There's no way my DD is growing out of this thing any time soon. 63 inches is MY height.

@youboots: I would put this off longer if you can. The crib-to-bed transition is no joke. We had to because DD was climbing out, and my google searching revealed a lot of moms about to lose their minds entirely over the process. We opted for a sleep training CIO approach which was horrible of course but we got through it and DD is now sleeping fine in her mattress on the floor. (We're still staining/sealing the newly acquired Ikea toddler bed).

Our DS was happy in his crib and sleep was awesome so we kept him in until he was almost 3.5. We skipped the toddler bed and went right to a full size bed. The transition was smooth and he loved his bigger bed!

@youboots: DS1 transitioned at 18 months, and DS2 at 13 months - both of them to "big kid" beds. We skipped toddler beds entirely. I would have transitioned DS2 even earlier, but he had such low mobility that there wasn't much point. Maybe I'm late to the party, but I'm not sure of the point of a toddler bed? DS2 just has a single step to get into his twin bed (he can get out fine without it).

@sunset840: good point. It may be time for bumpers. I don't think it's in her wheelhouse to climb out.

just went to a toddler sleep class last night and the coach was really strongly in the camp of not moving them until three when they can learn the sleep rules of not leaving the bed, etc. It made sense if nothing is broken to not mess with precious sleep.

@LindsayLou: I just looked on craigslist that may be the route we go.@ snowjewelz: I was thinking bumpers too but I can't imagine that it will work for 2-3 more years.

I got the Stokke on Craigslist for 1/2 price. It does become a toddler bed by removing an insert which does not solve the size problem. The extender to make it work for a bigger kid would be $400 plus an oval mattress plus custom sheets/ if we made that big of investment we would likely need to just buy a new crib for a second kid eventually. I think we will just get something inexpensive in the interim.

I want to say don't fix what's not broken... lol. We had to b/c #2 arrived. We just did a twin floor bed. She was exactly 24 months when we transitioned.

Can you get bumpers so he limbs don't hang out? When they're this old, bumpers are safe right?

What about getting a basic toddler bed to use until she's big enough to move into the twin? Maybe an IKEA one? We're in a similar predicament. We have a gorgeous wrought iron twin frame that was mine as a kid. But it's very high off the ground and I wouldn't trust my kid in it until 4 or maybe even five. It seems like a waste to buy another twin frame, but we're going to have to either get another twin or get something in between.

@looch: it's the Stokke Sleepi allegedly up to 10 year olds can sleep in it- but reviews I've read say up to five. But the mattress is oval so bedding is a challenge and the conversion kit is several hundred dollars.

Oh, another idea is to get a futon and turn it to face the wall.

What do you want to do with the conversion kit, make it into a full sized bed?

@looch: I'd have to look at it but I think it's 2 ft off the ground. Perhaps it could be worked on to make it closer to the floor. It's iron.

Our crib has a conversation kit but I think it's really expensive

Could you do bedrails on the bed that you have? We used the mesh ones with great success.

I searched past posts and could not find what I was looking for.

T is 2 and is a great sleeper- typically she STTN 12-13 hours and naps 1.5-3 hours. She's a big kid- 80% for height. Lately her limbs have been hanging out of the crib- which looks uncomfortable. She has never tried to crawl out.

My question is if you made the choice (not due to your kid crawling out) when did you transition? Any ideas on how to keep her comfortable (I'm worried about her getting stuck)? Do I find a bigger crib that converts to a toddler bed? Our crib is kind of small. I'd love to keep her in a crib as long as possible because I have a beautiful big girl bed- it was my sisters but it's pretty tall. Any ideas or advice for me?
