We switched at 18 months and it went smoothly. I think if we would have waited until she was older, we would have had more of a difficult transition, because it would have occurred to her that she could get out of bed and run around. We transitioned her over a year ago, and she has still never done that!

Our son was in his crib until 33 months. We transitioned him 3 months before LO2 was due, but he probably would have gone on happily sleeping in the crib if we hadn't needed it for the new baby.

@plantains: Hi! our girl is 32 months old, and I was completely happy to keep her in her crib until literally last weekend.
That's when she figured out how to climb out.
So I converted her bed to a day bed, and am now spending every night while she falls asleep on her floor to keep her in bed,
I'm using a pool noodle under her bottom sheet to act as a buffer. the first night she completely freaked out when she bumped into it while sleeping, but she's been fine since.

I would switch so that you don't have to buy another crib. We switched DD1 to a twin bed after she turned 2 without any issues.

Liam is 31 months and still in his crib. And he's potty trained. We bought a second crib for baby #2 because we don't want to rush him and he's happy in his crib. I plan on switching him to a twin sized bed when he's around 3.5 if he doesn't show signs of being ready sooner.

@plantains: or a book light! We have one that I thought of zip tying to her rail, the clip isn't quite big enough to stay on well.

We did about a month ago when DD1 was about 28 months. Same thing, she never tried to climb out, and slept very good in the crib. But she would never have her blanket on her and she was looking very long in her crib. We bought her a big girl bed and she transitioned very well. Plus we have a lot of blankets on it so she is usually partially covered up all the time. She climbed out once but went back in when we told her too. We bought her a flashlight and give her a book so that keeps her busy until she falls asleep.

@plantains: He fell out pretty often for the first few weeks, but he hardly noticed and would just curl up on the floor and sleep. He would come into our room at first, but we just told him to go back to bed, so he started reading in the mornings.

Good to hear positive stories as we are thinking of transitioning DS who is also 29 months to a twin bed. Every time I ask him if he wants a big boy bed in his room he says no. Hopefully he'll think it's great once it's in his room.

@kiddosc: @Bao: my DD gets up really early so it would be great of she did this although I'm not sure she will be able to see in the dark.

@plantains: my LO was actually giving us a HARDER time going to bed in her crib, once we put her in her "big bed" she thought she was so cool and went right to sleep. I kept watching her on the monitor thinking she was going to try and get out of bed but she never did.

We just recently did the transition at 29 months. Like you he was perfectly happy in his crib and didn't try to climb out. I want to start potty training soon though and didn't want to do lots of changes at once, so we tackled the bed transition first. He did awesome. When he wakes up in the morning he gets some books for himself and sits in bed and reads until we get him. :)

I don't think there is any cutoff point as to when you have to convert her to a toddler bed, whenever you feel she is ready! We switched LO to a toddler bed about 2 months ago I think, and I was extremely nervous about how she would adjust but she did great!!

My DD is almost 29 months old and still perfectly happy sleeping in her crib. She makes no attempt whatsoever to climb out. I am not pregnant and it will probably be at least 6 more months before I start trying so there is not reason for her to vacate the crib anytime soon.

My DH thinks that we need to convert the crib to a toddler bed because she is getting to old for a crib. WWYD, convert now or wait longer? Is there a cut off point at which she should be in a toddler bed?
