For awhile DS and I coslept until DH put his foot his down about rollover risk. DS sleeps in his crib and wakes 2 times in MOTN for a quick change and nurse. His first sleep stretch is about 4-5 hours.

I sleep right next to him on the floor every night. My back is sore, but this way I am close by when he needs me.

Do what feels right for you.

@SweetiePie: oh I know you didn't mean it like that, that's why I didn't specifically @ you !! :) I just wanted to point out that while there can be risks to cosleeping, it's not sids, and the cosleeping experts (well, proponents) say it's actually protective against sids!

Btw... Looking back at the ways I accidentally coslept those first few months from time to time... Scary!

@junebugsmama: Sorry, I want to clarify because I fear I offended you and that wasn't my intent.

The AAP states that:
"The baby should sleep in the same room as the parents, but not in the same bed (room-sharing without bed-sharing)."
https://www.aap.org/en-us/about-the-aap/aap-press-room/pages/AAP-Expands-Guidelines-for-Infant-Sleep-Safety-and-SIDS-Risk-Reduction.aspx
https://www.healthychildren.org/English/ages-stages/baby/sleep/Pages/Preventing-SIDS.aspx

I only meant to make the point, and I guess I wasn't very clear on it, that many who are against bed-sharing are fine with the baby sleeping outside of the room, while many who are against sleeping outside of the parents' room are fine with co-bedding. Both of which contradict the AAP's recommendations. So its all a little contradictory/hypocritical, but I actually meant it in a positive way for us parents. That unless you're doing something blatantly dangerous (for the record, I don't think either safe co-sleeping OR baby sleeping in their own room in a safe crib are blatantly dangerous), you can't make a "wrong" decision. Which is where I meant to say that everything has upside and downside and real or perceived risks and we all just have to choose what works for us.

I really wanted my son out of the room because he was so, so loud when he slept, so even when he was sleeping and I was supposed to be sleeping, I couldn't sleep. And it was having a severely negative impact on my mental health (I had ppd and ppa). So knowing that him being in a bassinet next to my bed was recommended, I weighed the options and decided that him sleeping in his own room was best for us.
However, I would not co-sleep because of the risks I've read about. So my point is even I was contradictory in my reasoning for wanting to do one and not the other.

I think that we both said the same overall theme, to do what works best for her. I didn't mean for it to be a debate on sleep habits. I actually meant quite the opposite. That you can always read pros and cons for every single parenting decision, and in a way that should give us comfort that there's no "right" answer.

First of all SIDS risk is not higher when you cosleep, it's unsafe cosleeping that leads to suffocation deaths!

Good luck! I know you will make the right decision that leads to best sleep for you and baby. For me, that was cosleeping which we started full time around 3 months. Before that, he was sleeping great in a basinet. I am also a nurse, and I understand the need to be on your game! Just trust your parenting instincts and do what feels right. Transitioning back to work is tough no matter how well and independent your baby is sleeping so be kind to yourself!

I agree that you should do whatever will maximize your sleep. I would rather not cosleep most of the time because I sleep better without my son in bed. But I will choose to sleep with him than stay up in the middle of the night!

I feel for you. My son didn't sleep in his own room til maybe 8 months, through the night at 9. I just want to say that the early days are hard and unpredictable, so give yourself permission to do whatever you need to get some sleep. Good luck!

It'll be ok :-) All of the big transitions and milestones feel really hard and scary at first. We actually transitioned him from bassinet in our room to crib in his room at 3 weeks (for various reasons) and I felt the same way. I worried he would feel scared and alone (which in hindsight seems silly) and I cried for the first couple of nights. But I swear he slept even better and I slept better. It was a win-win all around.

It'll be ok! Don't let the SIDS stuff scare you. SIDS can also happen when you cosleep. And I don't say that as a judgement, I say that to show that every decision we make as parents has a scary statistic associated with it. Sort of damned if you do, damned if you don't. As long as you're not being blatantly reckless with your child's wellbeing, we all just have to do what works for us.

Guys, I needs some encouragement. DD is 11 weeks old and I am returning to FT work next week as an RN. DD has been in a bassinet next to our bed or in our bed since she was born, but her night sleep sucks and I have to feel more human before I go back to work (I sedate people, for gosh sakes!).

I am reading "Sleeping Through the Night", and tonight is night one of getting her to fall asleep on her own. It went OK (not too much crying, asleep in about 40 min), but I am having some serious withdrawals. I would have kept her with me for way longer, I was really thinking 6 months (though it really does get in the way of intimacy). I'm regretting missing the time with her at night. I'm reading about increased SIDS in babies that aren't in their parent's room. I'm feeling all sad and weepy.

I will be bringing her back into our room if (let's be real, when) she wakes up in the MOTN, so that helps me feel better, but what about when she sleeps through the night?

Has anyone else had to do this? How did it go? Tell me it will be OK!!!
