My daughter is 13 months and we just put the toddler rail up that came with her crib instead of the other side of the crib. She never liked getting in her crib and with the toddler rail she excitedly crawls in and out. The mattress on the lowest setting makes her only about 5 inches off the ground so she just scoots her butt to the edge and can get in and out fine on her own but there's no way she'd be able to do a toddler bed yet. We have the baby gate in her door (and leave her door open) so she can't walk around the house but she doesn't feel closed in.

My plan is to go to a mattress on the ground, gate in the doorway. We'll remove almost everything from his room (rehome the toys to a playroom) and cross our fingers.

All of my friends who bought toddler beds regretted it because they thought it would've been a better idea to buy a twin sized bed from the get go. We already had an extra full sized bed in one of our rooms so we just put the mattress on the ground, put a baby gate around it, and let him sleep there. Figured it would be easier to transition him to the bed since he's already used to sleeping on the mattress. We LOVE the floor bed!

DS is 21 months old and I am due with his little sister in October. I was thinking now would be the perfect time to get him into a big boy bed, so we could use the crib for the baby. My husband and I are a little perplexed about how to do this and whether to buy a toddler bed or a proper twin bed.

How did everyone go about this? Did you put the mattress on the floor at first or use bed rails? For people who bought toddler beds, how long did your child stay in it? Did you think it was a good purchase? Toddler beds are just much cheaper than regular beds, but I don't want to buy a piece of furniture that will be useless in a year or two.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks for reading!
