@Foodnerd81: Ah ok. We'd probably just go ahead and go cold turkey. I was thinking of getting the Ikea Kuva loft bed, which has a frame all the way around it, except for the ladder. We were going to do a hack and use the 3 step shelf thing to make steps up to the bed. I want to say that maybe she'd stay in bed better this way? But it would definitely be safer for her to get down.

we just transitioned my son at 2 years 8 months for other reasons, but I see this as a big perk. He never could understand sleeping in a bed before like even with us. Hopefully next time we travel he can just sleep between me and my husband!

@abbydabbydoodlebug: well the bed has always been in her room, so for a long time now when she would wake up during the night, Dh or I would go and sleep in it with her. So the switch to being in the bed on her own has been gradual anyway. But when we tried at 2 (because she was screaming in the crib) she would get out of bed over and over until we put her back in the crib. That went on for a week or so until it was crib full time.

This time she had a few nights where she would cry in the crib and ask to sleep in the bed, so we let her and she would stay. Then one day Dh put her there for nap (she had been napping in the crib this whole time) and she realized she could climb into the crib from the bed. Then realized she could climb out. So crib is done. But so far the transition has been seamless. I guess she is just ready now. We will be traveling next month so I'm hoping she likes sleeping in a big bed in our rental house too!

@Foodnerd81: I was thinking of that too. I know we'll be in an embassy suites one night so we'll have a pull out couch at least. I can try to get a double queen room for the other hotel we'll be in. And the house we're renting has an extra bedroom I believe that my in laws said we could use for DD.

About how long did it take your LO to adjust to sleeping in a big bed?

@abbydabbydoodlebug: I see. Well I can tell you how it goes next month, which will be our first trip since C moved to the big girl bed!

One other thought- is a regular bed a possibility for her while you travel? Like a hotel room with two beds, one for her one for you guys? That way it would be like her regular bed. But, I'm guessing no, especially if you are staying with people.

@Foodnerd81: Last time we tried a pack n play, it was a big fail. She's too big for it and couldn't get comfortable to sleep. We had to run out and get the inflatable kids mattress that same day. So we have to do some sort of bed situation.

I think we will be in the same room as the one she is sleeping in for the trip. I don't think child proofing will be a big deal because we haven't had to much of it at all. She is good about not getting into things and doesn't like dangerous situations. She's very cautious.

I just didn't know if we had her sleeping in a big bed at home would help her sleep better in a big bed while we're on vacation.

@abbydabbydoodlebug: is there a reason you can't use a travel crib, like a pack and play or sinilar? I would think that would be easiest since whatever room she is sleeping in might not be that child proofed. But maybe she is too big for it or it's too big to travel with?

I don't have much advice but I will say we tried transitioning my lo to a big bed at 2 years and it was a big fat fail- she couldn't stay in bed, bedtime was a nightly battle, and we went back to the crib. She is 2.5 now and just transitioned to the big bed (just realized she can climb out of the crib) and has done so much better. The extra time really helped I think. So maybe your LO will do better just because she is older.

We're taking a week long trip to the northeast from Texas this June (Niagara Falls/Toronto) and DD will be sleeping in a travel blow up bed in hotels and a house we are renting. She's only slept on it one other time at grandma's house, and it wasn't terrific. She did OK, not great. Had to lay down with her for her to go to sleep because she kept coming out at nap. Bedtime was fine. DH and I were discussing if we should transition her before or after the trip? I really have no clue if one would be better or not. She will be 2 years 4 months at the time of the trip. Thoughts?
