DS transitioned to one nap at daycare prettily easily as he wasn't sleeping much otherwise. However, he still took 2 naps at home on the weekends for a month until he dropped the second nap.

We tried to practice getting to 1 nap before she started, but it was a complete fail, let the buzz and excitement of daycare happen and she takes a solid 2.5 hour nap each day now.

As for transitioning to daycare. She started fulltime the first week of October. Two weeks before she and I went three times, three different days for an hour or so. The next week she went for two half days, I stayed with her until it seemed like a good time to leave, and then we jumped in the following week and she had no issues! A few weeks later she got a little clingy for a week, but that was it!

We did a week lead-in time where we went for an hour together the first two days, we left her for an hour on the third day, we left her for 3 hours the fourth day, and on Friday, she stayed for lunch without me around. She started full time on the Monday and did fine, although we took her in a little late (9) and picked her up early (4). She cried once that transition week when I came in to get her, picked her up, but then sat her down to put on her booties. Besides that, she's excited to go in every day.

If you're just going to start her on full days right away, I would do a short week just to get her used to it. Tell your daycare provider to call if she's really upset, and if you can, maybe stay for a little while the first day (it also helps you see how things work).

My son went to daycare when he was 2 and we transitioned for a long time, so I don't know how helpful my input would be.

We started with just the morning and then he'd get picked up and have lunch and nap at home. When we felt he could stay longer, we started sending him through lunch, with the nap at home. Then the final frontier was the nap at daycare, which took a bit of help from one of the teachers. She actually skipped her lunch so she could sit next to my son while he held her hand and learned how to sleep without his beloved sleepsack.

Okay, thanks for everyone's input! I think we've decided she'll just go to one nap when she starts daycare.

Next question:

Our original plan was to transition her in slowly, sending her two days one week, three days the next until she was up to full-time.

Given that we're now going to make a significant change to her daily schedule when she starts, do you think it would be better to just send her full-time from the start? Maybe start on a Wednesday or Thursday so her first week is a short week?

The daycare lady told me that K won't really get used to daycare until she's full-time and that the slow transition is more for me than for her :) Having said that, I know she'll be absolutely fine, as she's super social, loves other kids, and has yet to exhibit any major separation anxiety. I'm just thinking it might actually be less confusing for her to just go full-time from the beginning.

Two naps got pretty bad for us at 10-11 months. LO naturally transitioned to 1 nap just before she turned one. Now at 2.5 she's still on the same schedule for nap. She naps every day after lunch for 2-2.5 hours.

My son transitioned at daycare super early, at 10 months. I asked them to keep trying 2 and his room only took 1 so getting him to nap in a room ful of toddlers with the lights on was near impossible. In the warmer months he would take a catnap on the morning in his stroller (like 20-30 min) and then a long afternoon nap (1-3). He only went 3 days a week so he still took 2 naps at home until 14-15 months (and his naps were 9-1030 and 230/3-4)

@Smurfette: How funny - we're the opposite! Daycare cannot keep her up for 1 nap, and I can't get her to sleep for 2.

I don't know if this influences your decision at all, but some kids go to one nap suuuper early. SIL had her 2 kids on one nap before they were 6 months. (I personally think it's a bit crazy, but what do I know?). L is 14 months and there's no way she could do 1 nap all the time yet. So, maybe your daughter will adjust fine?

@heartonastring: I would just go to one nap. R is now on one nap a day at day care. She is more stimulated there so she can stay up that long. At home, no way. We are still doing two naps at home.

@dagret: okay, that's good to know!

I would actually be thrilled with her only being on one nap, because I hate scheduling our lives around two naps, but I'm just worried about doing it before she's ready and it backfiring or having some sort of ill effect.

@tinyperson: That's really helpful and reassuring - thanks! And yeah, I plan to keep her on the same schedule at home as she's on at daycare. I think it's easier for everyone that way, and our daycare lady really encourages it too.

@heartonastring: that's the same nap schedule L's room is on.

I think it might be even harder for her to go down that early b/c she'll be overstimulated as compared to being at home - it is MUCH easier for L to stay up till 12:30 at daycare as opposed to when he's home with us.

@heartonastring: what's the proposed schedule for 1 nap? Is there one?

We transitioned to 1 nap when L moved up out of the infant room. It was a bumpy week or two, but he's adapted beautifully. and it's better than trying to force him down twice!

No advice, but we started at daycare at 13 months (daycare centre) and they said that they would work with her schedule (in the infant room), but really, they've been putting her down for only one nap. We've just decided to let it go, and it's been working all right for us so far. We've kept the one nap schedule at home on the weekends (mainly because Saturday would be the only day we could get 2 naps in because Sundays we're at church in the morning). So, if you get in the centre, chances are, they'll move her to one nap there too...

I'm going back to work May 1. DD will be 1 ( her birthday is April 24). She's going to start transitioning into her in-home daycare at 11.5 months.

I've been corresponding with her care provider about naps. She says that she's happy to keep DD on two naps, but that to coordinate with her schedule they'd need to be at 9 and 1. She's really big on routine and that's something I really like about her, so I do understand that she can't accommodate every kid's individual schedule.

Right now, DD takes two naps a day, and they usually fall around 10:15-11:30 and 3:00-4:30. She needs 3.25-3.75 hours of wake time before she's tired enough for a nap. So, the only way I could get her tired enough to nap at 9, would be to wake her up before 6 - not happening!

I'm wondering, based on all the above info, if I should just let her transition to one nap when she starts daycare? She's a really good sleeper and I don't want to mess with that, but I feel like with the daycare schedule she'd actually get MORE sleep with one nap than two.

Thoughts?

Has anyone else done this successfully? Tips?

ETA: There's a daycare centre that we really like and have a slim chance of getting DD into and they will work with each kid's personal schedule and let them nap whenever. I'm toying with calling them and seeing if there's any chance of us getting in there, but I realize this is kind of insane, given it would only be a few months before she'd be down to one nap normally anyway.
