I really liked the wholesome baby food website as well. I just took my time introducing one new food at at time, I did homemade purees first and then later started finger foods

We started letting LL "taste" things during month 4 and 5, and just this week (he just turned 6 months) we have been introducing part of our dinner, BLW style. Last night he ate a sweet potato fry (and by ate, I mean gummed it a little until it dissolved in his hand) and this morning I gave him a stick shaped piece of banana. He didn't have much luck there, so I mashed it up a little with one of his forks, then put it on the fork and handed it to him. He played around with trying to get it into his mouth and mayyyybe swallowed a little? The BLW book I read said not to expect them to actually get much nutrition from solids the first few months....that what they are really doing is experimenting with the skills they need to eat by themselves. Their nutrition comes from bm or formula...they are not starving! Hungry babies let you know!

I agree with the pps about not starting if you're not ready, but remember, it doesn't have to be whole hog, 3 meals a day, every day.

I'd just do what you feel comfortable, starting with really whatever you want. If it makes you feel any better, I was advised to begin with pureed meats, which we didn't do. We did orange vegetables, which my son loved.

@Phillybaby2013: ugh. Daycare is sooo pushy with solids and putting rice cereal in their bottles, etc. So annoying. I only did puree's a few times a day at that age. I tried the BLW thing but just made me too nervous with the gagging. I started more solid things once he mastered the pincer grasp at around 9 months. Then he really took off and can really feed himself about anything now at age 1. We did bottles until he turned 1 and I switched him to a sippy cup with no problems. Don't stress too much about it and don't let daycare push you into something you aren't comfortable with yet!

@Phillybaby2013: yea, same here. My mom kept telling me to start with rice cereal at four months. But I don't want to, mom! So leave me alone! hahaha

@locavore_mama: yes it is the same daycare. I didn't post a second update but I decided it was best for our family that I stay on 1st shift and after talking to the director and seeing positive changes to give them a 2nd chance. They've brought up solids to me before but they haven't been overly pressuring. I've told them what we've been doing and they go along with whatever I say. It's hard though to sort everything out when the majority of IRL parenting advice I get is from older people. Even when I talk to parents with younger kids, delaying solids is like crazy talk so the only resources I have for current information is the internet or HB. (Thank God for HB!)

@looch, @tinyperson: I had bookmarked that site a while ago when I was looking into BLW. I was trying to browse through it last night but it was alot of info to digest all at once - hence my current anxiety.

I guess I researched BLW and started playing around with food but never looked into the next steps and now feel completely overwhelmed! We have a good thing going over here - why would I want to change it. ; )

M is 11 months and it has only been in the last few weeks that she's really eating a substantial amount of food. I really just let her experiment with the food and followed her lead as to quantity. I felt the same anxiety about solids, but I've tried not to stress about it and it's really happened pretty naturally.

I was really stressed out about it too!
Same as you, we were half playing with BLW, but getting 2 days in a row of offering her food was a very rare occassion, and it was only once a day. At 7 months she hadn't made any progress. After getting a ton of grief from DH's parents about choking/gagging, and DH too, I ended up doing purees and just sent them to daycare so I didn't have to deal with it at all. She's almost 8 months and we're starting to do her 3rd 'meal' at home.
Now that's she better with swallowing we've started giving her solid food again, and it's going MUCH better!

Definitely don't stress about it! My ped told me she wants us to do 3 meals by 9 months, but only to get DD in the mental state of eating 3 times a day, so by 1 she's ready - not necessarliy for the nutritional part of it

I'm still stressed out by solids...I don't have daycare to worry about yet, but I'm dreading the transition to someone else feeding her and their expectations of where she should be at! Just yesterday, 2 days shy of 9 months, she ate a mini waffle for the first time by herself. Keep doing what you're doing - you're doing great.

I found this site to be helpful: http://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/

Aw! Don't worry! LO is 6 months and we are sorta starting.....but it's been hit and miss and only once a day! I figure right now is just for practice anyway (sitting in a high chair, introducing utensils and bowls, etc) I think your daycare is putting too much pressure on you. Your LO will learn solids on their own time! I mean you never hear about adults not eating solids.....we all learn sooner or later!

Our daycare is the same way! When I told them I wasn't introducing solids until 6 months, they were all "WHAT! He's STARVING!!! I gave my kid solids at 6 weeks!"

Now we're JUST starting solids (and failing miserably) and daycare is putting on the pressure to let them give him solids, and I'm all "No way! You can't give him solids until we have been successful at it at home!"

There's no rush to start solids before 1! Just follow your instinct and do whatever you think is right! I'm planning on doing one "meal" a day for a month before I introduce a second meal, then do that for a month before introducing a third meal. And I have ZERO intention of giving him less bottles/nursing sessions!

I know, I get it! I was a mess about it, because I just wanted a schedule that told me what to introduce on a weekly basis!

Some resources I really liked were Wholesome Baby Food (has lists of what foods to introduce at what age), the Gerber site (has menus!!) and Weelicious for things you can make at home.

@Phillybaby2013: At 7 months NO WAY was I feeding my child 3 meals. My mantra was "food before one is just for fun"! At 7 months she was eating one meal at home and I use the term "meal" very loosely.

ETA: is this still the same daycare?

I really feel like I am clueless when it comes to solids and weaning and am about to have a panic attack. B is 7 months old tomorrow and we have dabbled in BLW and some purees for the last month but usually just at dinner time. We haven't been super consistent with it and he doesn't seem to mind. When I picked him up yesterday from daycare his teachers asked if he's had Cheerios yet. I said no, that we were still practicing. The one gave me a funny look and made mention of him eating meals like breakfast lunch and dinner at home. This set my brain off like maybe we weren't doing this whole solids thing right and sent me on a frantic google search ending with me posting here in a panicked state.

What started as looking for advice on how much he should be eating, took me down a scary path of stopping bed time bottles, drinking from cups, no bottles at all and a whole bunch of other stuff that I didn't know I was supposed to be doing or not doing. Please talk me off my ledge and any points in the right direction for help would be greatly appreciated.
