@anbanan15: Poor you!

@T.H.O.U.: Nice, very smart!

@Mrsbells: Yup, that can be a toddler bed, but there are little beds, smaller than a twin, that you can also buy that are toddler beds.

I always thought a toddler bed was when you take down one side of the crib. Is a toddler bed something different altogether?

@Boogs: We went to a twin. We actually bought a set of bunk beds and kept them unbunked. It was perfect because the "top" bed had a rail built on!

Thanks for all the responses!

@Mrs. High Heels: Lol well guess I better hang onto these days still!

@Mrs. Yoyo: Without a doubt I'll follow that advice. LO doesn't ever sleep with us know and I definitely want to keep it that way.

@T.H.O.U.: Was yours a crib that converted to a toddler bed, or did you actually buy a toddler or twin bed?

@artbee: Great point! No belly for me yet, but definitely something to consider if I get to that point and he's still in the crib.

@anbanan15: Sorry to hear that. What kind of bed does he currently use?

We switched the crib to a toddler bed at 14 mo in hopes that LO would start sleeping in his own room, however that didn't work, but he still thought it was cool to climb on. He never slept in his crib either, but even the sight of it would send him screaming so at least that stopped when it looked more like a real bed.

@Boogs: every kid is different. If lo didn't climb out we wouldn't have switched yet.... But I'm glad we did because it was surprisingly easy. And now it's easier to get her to go to bed, all I have to say is, do you want to get in your big girl bed? And the extra plus for me is I don't have to lift her in.... At 22 weeks I'm not sure this belly could take it already.

We did it around 22 months and it went great. She sleeps much better now that she has more room.

@Boogs: only advice I can give you there is to lovingly but firmly return him to his own bed if he does. It's tempting to lay down with him in either bed, but i do NOT want him expecting that...

@Boogs: we transitioned DD because we were expecting her little bro in a couple months and didn't want to buy a new crib. she did really well!

here's my post on it: http://www.hellobee.com/2012/11/21/transitioning-a-22-month-old-from-crib-to-twin-bed/

if i had no reason to switch from a crib though, i would've kept her in it as looong as possible. nowadays, she comes running into our room at 6 in the morning and there's no way to contain her. back then, we were spoiled because if she did wake up in her crib before us, she would happily play in it until we went to get her... haha, the good ol' days.

@Mrs. Yoyo: He seems content. The only thing that has been different was that last night he asked to lay in my bed. I turned him down, but made me wonder if he wanted a bed change. Though at the same time don't want him creeping in my bed either lol.

@Boogs: If he's content I say let him stay in his crib awhile longer! We only transitioned at 25 months so we could use the crib for Baby 2. But we have lucked out like @artbee: He doesn't get out of bed without us there.

@artbee: @MamaBehr: Thanks! Surprisingly LO hasn't tried to climb out of the crib...yet. He's 28 months, but maybe not ready yet?

We decided to move DD when she started to crawl out of her crib, and not because she was mad. She was 26 months old (a few months after her second birthday). DD, DS and I actually flew home for a week and DH made the transition while we were gone. We put a full mattress on the floor, picked out a cute bedding set (complete with expensive matching pillows), and hoped for the best. She did GREAT! We have never had an issue with her getting out of bed when she wasn't suppose to and she has only fallen out once or twice, more than a year later.

The biggest thing I can recommend is put a thing on the doorknob so your LO can't get out of the room from the beginning. What I have noticed with friends and their kids/complaints about this process, is the child's ability to get out of his or her room. DD can't and doesn't get upset about it because she's never been able to open the door!

Right before she turned two she started climbing out of the crib. We had her grandparents over because dhs dad helped put the new big girl bed together, so it was all very exciting for her, we made a big deal out of the big girl bed, gave her a pillow and tucked her in. She loved it. For some reason she doesn't know that she is allowed to get out of bed without me there, so she will lay and play until I get there and not get into trouble. It's awesome.

What made you decide to switch your toddler to a toddler bed? How old were they? How was the transition, and did you learn any tricks you can share? :)
